Hello, I'm so glad to find an active forum about thecus products :-D I have a N5200 with the original firmware (1.00.01.3) and I'm using it for month now. I never installed any module nor upgrade the firmware. And today I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the firmware to the latest version (1.00.07) ... so I did it, but the process always stop at 5% with the message : "System firmware upgrade fail". I tried many times but it always stop at 5% I didn't reboot the NAS as they say it would destroy the datas so I'm really stuck now and don't know what to do .. and very very scared about my datas I sent a message to the thecus support but don't have any answer, so please any help would be greatly appreciated ! best, Matthieu

Hi Matthieu, welcome to the forum.... In order to have a chance what's going on on your device I need some more information: 1) During the firmware upgrade you should be able to see some messages on the LCD display. Can you post them here or at least the last one? 2) Did you configure the e-mail notification on your device and did he send you any e-mail during or after the upgrade? Unfortunately the 5% doesn't help us in any way because the percentage is incremented asynchronously.... Andreas

Hi, thanks for your quick answer during the upgrade the lcd panel shows : Information / start upgrade and then Information / upgrade C[3] fail and the top LED is always red since the first upgrade attempt and I don't receive any email but I don't think I set it up I didn't find any information about this c[3] error ..

Hi Matthieu, with this information it is now possible for me to tell you where the firmware upgrade script fails, thanks... In the upgrade step "Upgrade C[3]" the directory /cloopfs and everything below it is deleted and then the contents of /tmp/upgrade/part3/... is copied to /cloopfs. If that copy command exits with a non-zero status then the message you're seeing will be shown and the upgrade is terminated. Due to the source code there are no good reasons why the upgrade script fails at that stage so the only reason I can imagine is that your firmware file is somehow corrupt. The file N5200upgrade.1.00.07.bin has exactly 33132800 bytes for me. Is it the same for you? Just try to download it again and try again - but it'd be better to not reboot your device.... Andreas

Hi Andreas,
Unfortunatly it still doesn't work after downloading the file again. I have the same byte count as you. Is it possible that the file is corrupted on thecus website ??
I did the upgrade from firefox on a linux Pc and I try with safari from a MAC too, downloading the file from thecus website each time but with the same result ...
do you think it's safe to do a "factory reset" ?
again thanks a lot for your help
Matthieu

Matthieu, I'm doing all my work using firefox, so this shouldn't be the reason..... Just in case you're able to check the MD% checksum, here is mine: eb6a37e68da0b7acf48cce921317fbc0 N5200upgrade.1.00.07.bin Still I cannot see any reasons why the upgrade fails at this point. As you're upgrading from a very old firmware I'd suggest to upgrade first to 1.00.04 or 1.00.05 and then to 1.00.07. There are good chances that the upgrade procedure hasn't be tested for 1.00.01.3 to 1.00.07 But this is only a guess.... As a last resort a factory reset shouldn't harm your system but I'm really not sure as your firmware upgrade got stuck in the middle. I really would like to give you more possibilities and information on what could be done in this situation but that's really hard now as you're not able to log in and I never have had something like that. In figuring out what might be the cause from the source is really hard. But keep on asking, I'll keep on trying.... Andreas

I have the same md5 checksum as you, so the file should be correct ... I thought too about trying to upgrade to an older firmware first but they are no more available on thecus website, do you know where i can find them ? I had no luck with google .. I really thank you for your help and the time spent, I will keep on asking and googling and maybe the thecus support will answer me ..
thanks again, Matthieu

Although the GPL packs for past releases are at www.thecus.com/Downloads/ the older firmware images don't seem to be there any more, as far as I can see. Perhaps we should keep a seperate archive of these things on the Wiki, assuming that would be legal. I have everything from 1.00.04 to 1.00.07 on file here. Matthieu, I'd be happy to send you these if you send your email address by PM here. Andrew.

Thecus has all of the firmware updates on their website. Just click products->n5200->download and you'll see everything.

Thecus has all of the firmware updates on their website. Just click products->n5200->download and you'll see everything. But the link leads always to the latest version - actually to 1.00.07. br Peter

Ahh, I see what you're saying. Once you click one of the firmware links it goes to anther page with only the .07 firmware. Hmm, you might have to email thecus and ask them for an older firmware.

But remember, Andrew already offered to send the firmware on a private basis....
And I can provide it under that condition too....

I wonder if it would be ok for you to either post more information regarding the "factory_test.sh" file, like what is inside it and how to use it. If this file can be run from a USB drive, it sounds like we can use that to do recovery of the system, but would have to see what it is doing. Just not sure on the license info for that file.

Hi Teng, hi mamat, sure I don't know yet what factory_test.sh file mamat was receiving, but I'm quite sure it was the same contents like in the factory_test.sh file which is already on your N5200 (as I cannot believe that they have done it from scratch) Mamat, could you check out if the factory_test.sh you received equals that one already on your N5200: /img/bin/factory/factory_test.sh ? This also answers your concerns about the licensing... Andreas
