Hi Everybody
I have installed SlimServer as a module (SLIMSRV) on my Thecus N2100. SlimServer is running, but I have the problem, that I don't have the correct folder name for the iTunes entries on the "Home / Server Settings / iTunes" tab.
All my music is stored within the standard iTunes directory of N2100, which also is used to share for iTunes Users within the LAN. The SlimServer Music and Playlist folders are set to "/var/music".
Any idea, who the folders are named on the N2100? (I'm not that familar with UNIX/LINUX, as I'm using Mac OS X and never needed to use Terminal ;-)) )
In addition to this problem, I recognized, that M4A files can't be played. On the "File Types" tab, Apple AAC... is not selected and a selection causes an error message: "Required binary was not found: [mov123] $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 --endian big --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 -"
Any advice, how I can this install and what I have to do else, that I get M4A played? Or any advice, how I can get 6.5.4 running on Thecus (without being an UNIX-Guru ;-) )?
SlimServer credentials are:
SlimServer Version: 6.3.1 - 8476 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1 Thecus Firmware: 2.1.06

Install META and enable the slimserver startup script. Your Thecus will require internet access though as slimserver will be downloaded and installed on the fly. It's version 6.5.4 and handles aac transcoding for your squeezbox.

getmytheMerci for the Tip... META Module is installed... Slimserver 6.5.4 is installed and running... But, it's not grabbing my iTunes Libs and feeding it to the Slimserver DB. All directory entries are set to "/home/slimserver/music". Also all entries within the "iTunes Music Library.xml" have been change to this diretory. This file also stays in the iTunes directory. iTunes is public and browsable. As I have my primery iTunes Lib on a LaCie EthernetDisk, which also works as file server, I have a copy of the iTunes Libs on the Thecus, which is my back-up and updated automatically every night. But as the Thecus is doing nothing else then being a backup NAS, it would be great to use is as the slimsever system. So, any idea how I can solve my problem is highly appreciated. Grüässli and Merci iMacli

After the installation everything should be setup as required. The only thing that you still have to do yourself is to push the scan button in Slimserver to start parsing all your files. This step will take several hours in case of a library with thousands of files. The xml file is not needed, just make sure that all music stored in the iTunes share has public access rights.

Thanks... I tried a couple of times to scan by starting it via the button in menu. But it finish the scan after a couple of minutes... on my LaCie it took about 4 hours for a full scan... 30'+ titles in iTunes Library. But I have the assumption now, that maybe it's a problem with the RAM. In the doc of slimserver script you wrote, 256MB is required (read it after my last posting ). N2100 has only 128MB at the beginning. I will buy today a 512MB and try it again. Keep you up to date... thanks for support.. Regs iMacli

So, here's a short update.... I've installed today a new RAM with 512MB. I tried to rescan the music lib again, without success. Afterwards I deaktivate and delete the META module from N2100. Rebooting and reload the module again. Afterwards I put on the slimserver options on META, wait 'till activity on N2100 is down by 0% for longer time. Then restart N2100 again. Still 0 artists, 0 Titles etc.... I did a manual activated scan of music lib. With the same result. 0 entries. Afterwards I deleted the "/home/slimserver/music" entry on the iTunes tab on server settings. Again a manual rescan. Again same result. 0 entries. Therefore I'm at the end with my options to try... any guesses from your side? Maybe a complete delete of META and especially slimserver? If yes, how to do it the best way? Thanks and regs iMacli PS: just as a quick note, having META installed and activated, on the RAID tab of the Web GUI, no figures appearing. Deactivating META or having all Scripts on off, RAID figures show up again...

I did some further testing.... here are my findings so far...
a) Performance is very lousy... die Web GUI of Slimserver needs about 30 to 120 Seconds to reply... doesn't matter, which operation is executed from Web GUI. Each operation brings the N2100 up to 100% system usage.
b) Communication between Slimsever, Squeezebox and WebGUI doesn't work correctly... playing a title ends up with an empty display on Squeezebox , except the colums on right side, music is only playing partially and the right side of WebGUI stays empty at all... only a reboot of N2100 and Squeezebox helps, but, only 'till a new track will be choosen for playing. -> Probably explainable with the 100% CPU usage.
c) Slilmserver database will not be update, as described before. I can browse the music folder via web GUI and all are showing up, and if one album is selected, it will be also entered into the database. But the rescan of music folder doesn't do any updates to DB.
So, this leads up to my guesses, that probably something wrong with the DB. Maybe as a result of the lack of RAM at first installation something went corrupt. I ran Slimserver on my LaCie EthernetDisk with only 223 MB RAM, where the response times are quite good, even running a nummer of other tasks on the System. On N2100 the only big task running is Slimserver, except the nightly back-ups to N2100 (but the back-up SW is running on the LaCie.)
Or is my music folder to big? I don't think so, as Slimserver on LaCie manage this quantities as well without troubles.
N2100 credentials are now as follows:
512MB RAM FW 2.1.06
META Module installed and activated
Music Folder Stats are: 910 Artist 2114 Albums 31'+ Titles 128kBits/s MP3 to 192kBits/s AAC Format, mainly the last one
I suggest to start from scratch again. Deinstall and delete META and especially Slimserver from my Box and then reinstall it again. What do you think about?
Is there a way to check, if my RAM expanding was sucessfull?
Any helpfull hints are highly appreciated.

Please download META v2.3.00, install/enable it and then remove it again. This should remove the previous slimserver installation. META versions prior to 2.3.00 would not properly remove some of the patches (finally fixed ). There are a few additional enhancements in the latest version which should make patching safer, e.g. minimize side effects. Now reinstall META again and enable slimserver. Performance is bad, maybe removing some of the unused plugins would help.

Getmythe, I don't see the Meta module listed in the directory the Wiki is linking to.

Something is going horribly wrong SlimServer cannot communicate with the mysql server anymore. I'm using the same SlimServer .deb and the same installer scripts as a couple of months ago. The only thing that changed is the debian chrooted stuff (possibly a new mysql version?).

Oh... sad to hear.... I have used your version 2.3 and installed it yesterday. The installation run's faster... approx. 20 Min it was done. Sucessfully... Also, the whole performance is much better with Slimserver. CPU usage is between 5 to 10%, even playing M4A music files. So, your change must have done something... in my case, much much better then on version 2.2. I have deactivated a couple of Plug-Ins, but assuming, that they are not the cause of lousy performance. I will test today this a little bit more in detail. What still is not working, is the scan of music library. I assume, that probably my music library is to big. If I have time, I will try later today with a smaller library (deleting approx 150GBs of data). Because if I use the music library link on Slimserver Main Menu on WebGUI, all folders are visible. That leads me to that the quantity of files is to large. If I browse manually the music folder, all choosen albums are entered into the database incl. the album covers. Also, what's not working, is the Player part within the WebGUI, after playing the first song. Only a fully boot of the Squeezebox will resolve that problem. The player itself works fine. Are there any known limitation? Temporary disk space? etc.? In Addition, Mem usage is between 250' and 350', so this could not be the problem of failing scan sucess. So, I hope you can resolve your MySQL problem soon. Anyhow, many thanks for your support and quick reactions. You do a great job!

In addition to my above posting... the WebGUI communication with the Squeezebox does not work anymore, even after rebooting N2100 and the Squeezebox. So, there seems to be something wrong as well.

So what I assumed, was correct. It's definitly a question of quantity.
I delete over 850 of my over 900 sub-folders and the scan works fine afterwards. Any idea how to move this limitation upwards?
Else I have to make my back-up more sophisitcated, that not the whole iTunes folder is copied to N2100, at least not into the iTunes folder of N2100.
So, any helpfull idea is as usual highly appreciated.

PS: I will post this question about limitation also on the Slimserver forum... If I get a helpfull answer, I will post it here as well...

Next update...
So, as mentioned before, the scan works now. But, assuming it's depending on the same problem, as you have, there is no access to artist, ablum or title possible via the WebGUI links. During the active WebGUI, the CPU usage is about 1 to 2 Percent.
Search access via Squeezebox works to albums and artists, but is very very slow, even with the limited number of titles and albums currently online. The access to titles does not appear on squeezebox after 10 minutes....

I don't think it is a question of the nbr of files in the database. It's more that mysql has major issues on debian etch arm platform. See also bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=458350. It looks like we have to wait until this is fixed by the debian maintainers.
