After some hesitation, my Thecus has found its final resting place in an old Commodore 1541, where it runs cool and quiet. And looks much nicer. I have made an instructable about this, for those who are interested: www.instructables.com/id/EP090QFF4TUMUGF/

Ouch...I'm in pain now! You've 'killed' the N2100 and put it in an ugly box. I think he will not feel comfortable in his new body, probably that's why he's beeping I'm also fan of the good old Commodore times, but this modification makes me think about new wine in old bags. Ofcourse, taste is very personal and many people will probably love it P.s.:The article you've made about the modification is neat!

You are right: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have only used non-permanent hot-glue though, so I can always move the Thecus into an empty corner of my PC when I get fed up with the current arrangement.
If I think about the nicest design for a NAS, I would probably like to have something flat and black, about 42x4x22 cm (like a modern DVD player), which fits below the printer. It is probably not too difficult to built, if you manage to bend the Thecus' riser (using a flexible PCI riser, perhaps). I think that this is what Thecus should have gone for, not the squishy, loud soap-box.
