Is it possible to load alternative OSs to the 2100? Like FreeNAS or m0n0wall? These both happen to be BSD, but that isn't important to the question, I think.

I have debian running on my box, There are plenty of guides on the internet on how to do this.
Debian has the N2100 as an official port.
You just upload a new firmware, reboot and wait. SSH into the box and go through the install (MDRaid is supported in the installer too!)
