Hi guys! My first post here, but I've been reading for a while - ever since I got the N2100 a couple of months ago. As title really: I found the original fan so loud I ordered a scythe fan to replace it, and fitted it with silicon barbs. I then tried to install the modules FANRPM and FANCTRL - CTRL installs and I can enable it - but nothing at all happens with FANRPM. Because of this I've got an RPM reading of 11!! this causes the fan alarm to sound every thirty minutes!!! I'm on firmware 2.1.03. As you may be able to tell - I'm a noob at all this - so please speak loudly and clearly! I hope someone can help. Thanks, MB

Hi m0nkeyb0y if you have firmware version 2.1.03 module FANRPM should be fine, but if you have beta firmware 2.1.03.1 please remove the module as it will not work properly. Are you sure you tried to upload a file with extension .mod? Most Windows zip utilities have crappy handling of .tgz files (which are standard for Linux). You may give www.7-zip.org/ a try or download the zipped version from the mirror. Does your replacement fan have three wires? If yes it should report rpm values, if no forget it! cheers getmythe

Thank you so much getmythe! Definitely not the beta firmware - I can confirm. And I'm pretty sure they've had the extension .mod but will try again with the unzipper you've provided the link for (I've previously been using WinRAR). Would you be able to supply the link for the module mirror? I'll check how many wires my fan has got when I get home - If it has got only two wires - what would you suggest I do (short of getting a new fan!)? Would there be any way of disabling the fan alarm, and maybe making the alarm temperature dependant? Thanks again getmythe. MB

You need the third wire to monitor the fan speed. Two-wire and three-wire fan use same connectors.

My bad, there is no mirror for FANRPM; There's only a mirror for the SSH module!
If you feel comfortable enough modifying shell scripts go ahead and install modules SSH and META. Then pack the following line into a startup script (using META script itunes-rescan_interval.sh as a template)
sed -i 's/le 1000/le 1/' /img/bin/temperature
Whether you want to get rid of the rpm alarm or convert it into a temperature alarm /img/bin/temperature is file your are looking for and META provides the means to easily modify scripts.
cheers Getmythe
PS: These instructions will only work if you do NOT install FANRPM

RATS! 2 wired fan - that's a shame given that it's almost silent Unfortunately I'm not comfortable enough to modify the scripts - I'd probably break my shiney new £200 YES box! I'll either research modifying scripts and try after that, keep on searching for an alternative solution, or replace that noisey old fan... Thanks for all your help, MB PS - would you be able to provide any noob friendly links for info on modifying scripts?
