Not that it probly helps that much but just had an idea with what i had laying around.
I ve put rubber washers on the screws that screw the harddisk in to the cage on my N2100 to help stop vibration abit and i even unscrewed the fan from the case and put that back on with rubber washers to stop that vibrating the case.
the rubber washers are the ones teh get from a silencing kit for ur pc eg the AcoustiFan or Vantec kits , i say rubber but they real just silicone

Some sort of soft feet for the box would probably help too.

In lieu of rubber feet I've cut as small sheet of thin foam to size and can confirm that it does help. Also, standing the unit on it's side appears to lower the average temperature and allow the fan to spin down (though I have no empirical evidence of this hence my earlier wish).

Strange that ... mine also sits on a piece of foam and I agree it is cooler on it's narrow side (power switch at top) - I think this is because the fan is off-centre and this way up it is nearer the top and hot air rises
I have also found that on very hot days (and we have been having a few in the UK) if I slide the top of the case back about 1cm (not totally removing) it cools better as it adds a gap for air intake at the front of the box ... pity Thecus didn't just use a mesh grill at the front!
I know this thread is re silencing - but anything that makes it cooler makes the fan run slower and quieter
