I am awaiting delivery of the 4200 and as someone without any previous NAS knowledge would like to ask for some advice.
1) Is the 4100 the nearest model so reading through that information would be of benefit.
2) Primary use would be on a home network with 2 other PCs which are on an ADSL Router, and 2 Media Streamers (connections via 2 network switches all hard wired) not Gigabit. Is it best to use lan or wan connection. Access from outside the home network not needed.
3) RAID setting, I will store movies of which I have the originals on disc and have a backup of my Photographs which at the moment is on both PCs, so enabling one PC to be freed up by transferring that archive to the NAS. Would RAID 0 be the best option for this. Ideally I would like to be able to stream movies via the Ethernet. I would probably put 2 drives in initially and add further drives later when needed.
3) During the summer we have temperatures in excess of 30 deg is there any precautions other than its own cooling that I would need to do. I would probably use the wake up on lan option.
Apologies for the length of this post, I am OK with PCs but the NAS is completely new to me and any information would be welcome.
Thanks madchester

Hi Madchester, I am new to N4200 as well, just got my NAS early this month. Let me share to you some of my experience. 1) I downloaded the N4200 manual from Thecus site. There are no other manuals there except this one. So far it helped me at least do the setup and provide familiarity with the device. I now can go in and out of the device, set up users, create folders, and other basic stuffs. Am now ready to upload my files (movies, pictures and songs) so I posted an earlier question about how to use iSCSI to have fast upload (haven't got answer yet). 2) I have cable modem and a gigabit dual-band router with Lan & Wan. 3) My 4 TB Raid disk drives came pre-installed. Haven't started doing any streaming yet - still completing the setting up. 4) I live in Las Vegas but I don't foresee any problem with the unit so long as I maintain the room temperature - that means I will put on the aircon if I needed it.
I will try to post any further experience I will have as I go along with my use of N4200.
Normanny.

Hi, Just got my N4200 (4 x 1 GB Raid 5)a few days ago. I too have no previous NAS experience and setting up has been a challenge. So far I have managed to install mods, set up users and permissions. I am hoping to get some advice/info on; 1. Keeping the device secure, 2. Running my own web server, 3. Accessing the device from the internet. If anyone needs help with WOL I have found a neat solution which works by creating a shortcut on the desktop! Regards. Lesoffers

Hi all, i am stuggling with a few things related to both the NAS and also my router.
First of all, WakeOnLan, i would like to know about it and save some electricity. :-P
Also, as I have chosen ZFS as filesystem for easier maintenance I am struggling to mount my NAS as a drive and seems I can only use Samba.
Has anyone mounted successfully the NAS as via Samba from a remote location?
Also, I have noticed that in Raid 5 with ZFS copying large number of files does have in my opinion quite a hit on performance, has anyone experienced this?
thx in advance.
