So I recently moved a long way away from my parents, used to live in the same city and now live literally across the country from them. When I left, I decided to leave them with a RAID1 NAS and picked a Thecus N2100, updated it to latest firmware and threw on a couple of mods.
The darn thing seems to shut itself down periodically. I'm not in constant contact and nobody really tells me when it does it, so I don't know how long it will stay up for or anything.
I'm finally free to buckle down and do some digging, now I just need to get them to turn it on and catch it while it is up. I have remote SSH access and can also pull up the web interface as needed.
My first plan is to install the WOL addon I found and test it, if it works I'll probably throw a cron job onto their router in the mean time to fire it up once or twice a day. From there, I hope to capture some logs (dmesg, messages) and see why the heck it is shutting down.
At first I assumed it was power outages, but then my dad's computer would have been off or at a login screen and he says it hasn't been. It is also way to frequent to be power outages, any time I hit their router or computers remotely, the d**n thing is off.
My two thoughts are heat issues or some time out that I've some how managed to over look. I believe I installed an HD spin down mod, but maybe instead of spinning the disks down it shuts down the NAS! :p
Anyway, anyone seen something like this or have any suggestions besides the obvious of looking through log files and/or hoping to catch it when it shuts down?
PS: I wasn't really sure if this is an appropriate place for support. The forum categories and descriptions of said categories doesn't imply it, but a number of the posts do.
