We are considering buying a N5200 Pro for storing some relatively low priority data in our company computer room. We have always used Network Appliances (which costs several times the N5200 in the past). 5 years ago we tested a system called the Snapserver (now taken over by Adaptec) - but that was unsatisfactory (at least at that time). We then concluded that low cost competition for high reliability storage was still not possible. Now we would like to experiment with Thecus.
1] We intend to use the Thecus N5200 with 5X1TB in Raid 6 to get 3TB usable.
Anyone has had any adverse experiences with this choice?
There is apparently only 1 supported 1TB drive
- the Hitachi 7K1000 - in the compatibility list on the Thecus
web site. Has anyone used any other 1TB drive?
2] There are some bad stories out there on the web. But these stories I believe are from early periods when the firmware was not mature. I would be interested in hearing experiences from people who have had a disk failure - within the past 6 months say. I have seen some testimony from people who have never had a problem. But that does not count! The test of the product is recovery from drive failure. It would be nice to know how many people who had a drive failure were able to recover routinely by popping in a new drive and how many not (also mention what raid config was used, size of drives and recovery time if known).
3] We will primarily be using a single large volume mounted by NFS. Would like to hear of any positive or negative comments with reference to stability or quirks in relation with NFS.
Thanks in advance.
