Hi, I've created another module which I really like after testing it for one day: FireFly (aka mt-daadp). FireFly is a media server who is enable to announce itself using the Apple Rendezvous broadcast protocol MDNS and to stream it's audio files using the Apple DAAP protocol (that one what iTunes uses). In other words: you can listen your MP3 files on your N5200 using the Apple iTunes client. The module will be available shortly here: onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/N5200_Module:_FIREFLYOn that page you will find a more detailed explanation, so I don't want to say much here. Personally I love this module because it is small, very fast and easy to maintain ;D - give it a try! From the projects page for FireFly comes this short overview: There are a number of features that differentiate Firefly Media Server from those other servers, and here is a partial list: - Support for running on unix/POSIX platforms
- Support for Windows (beta versions)
- Support for Mac OSX (coming soon!)
- Support for on-the-fly transcoding of OGG, FLAC, Apple Lossless, and WMA (beta versions)
- Web-based configuration
- Support for user-created smart playlists (beta versions)
- Integrates with iTunes library including reading playlists
- Supports serving streaming radio stations
- Did I mention fast?
- Under active development!

Hello, I read this forum with large interest. I've got a Pinnacle Soundbridge with Softwareversion 2.5.174 and a Thecus N5200 NAS. The firefly Server is recommended from pinnacle for the Soundbridge. So I installed the module on my NAS with Firmware 1.00.06.5. But my Soundbridge shows me an error: "incompatible server found". What could this be? Is there a Problem with the daap share or the rsp one. Maybe anybody just have an answer. Chris

Hi Chris, welcome here.... I have no idea as I neither know Pinnacle Soundbridge nor the internals of the FireFly program. But at this very moment I googled about FireFly Soundbridge and incompatible version and I've found this link www.rokulabs.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=67425&sid=e4b8ae298f3be43556bf5c283b986484basically telling that if using the nightly FireFly build, this issue will be solved..... Please do me a favor and do some more investigations by searching the Internet and post the result here. Maybe I'll do another version...... Thanks! Andreas

hi, I have found the same in google. forums.fireflymediaserver.org/viewtopic.php?t=5067forums.fireflymediaserver.org/viewtopic.php?t=4937&highlight=incompatible+serverPinnacles Soundbridge wont connect to DAAP Shares. They where writing that the RSP plugin should be activated. The nightlies build should work. But it's only a less tested code. It should run, but without guarante. nightlies.mt-daapd.org/I haven't found anyone how installed the Firefly Server on a NAS. So the most people told their problems with PC´s or MAC's. I have installed the Firefly Server on my Notebook to test the functionality. It works very good with the soundbridge. Better then the Mediabolic Server, but I think this is not difficult to top. So when you can spend a little more time I would be very grateful! But no hurry. OK, so far from me, I will continue to search the internet.

Hi Chris, No, I cannot try to add the plugin statements at the end of the config file.... But instead I have version svn-1498 (almost the latest nightly build) running on my N5200.... with plugins and the new sqlite V3 database feature.... ;D I've already prepared the updated module but wanted to check it once more. On the other side I'm really busy at the moment so that I might consider to just release the module as it is and maybe you want to help to find a possible final bug (there should be no serious though). Hi Omega,
Sensationally! The new module is working fine with my Soundbridge. The firefly server has more features and is really faster then the mediabolic server.
I'm still testing and will post when I find out more interesting things.
Best regards Chris

Hi Andreas,
i'm really ashame for asking silly questions like this:
I set up the module, started the server, see it running - also within my iTunes. My problem now is, I kinda can't specify my mp3 directory, cuz I am not advanced enough in unix filesystem.
In Windows it would look like \\XXXX\XXXX_data\iTunes\iTunes Music
Is the above the correct folder you mentioned? How do I tell Firefly to use this folder on My N5200? like ... /raid/data/.... (such and such) ??
Thanks for helping me, being so close yet and still no music ;-)

Ok, it's working now, after I figured out that I might try s well with setting the specific folder to public.
I dont yet know what this refers to, do they mean something like this directory rwx thing? Is there any security issue with public directories?

Actually it has nothing to do with the rwx thing, cause access to the directories are controlled via ACL (Access Control List) - but if You set a folder to public everyone who has access to the N5200 via the Network is able to read and write files on this public folder.
So, if You use Your N5200 only internal your private LAN and nobody else You don't trust is able to connect to Your LAN then it's OK - if You have enabled i.e FTP Access also from outside Your LAN, then everybody is able to store and delete files on this directory with the default allowed anonymous access.

Hi Omega, I have tried your firefly module (last version). Install was smooth. But I encountered authorization problem to set MP3Dir. I had to define a share MUSIQUE Private, browseable. Then to issue chmod o+rx /raid/data/MUSIQUE, chmod 775 /raid/data/MUSIQUE to permit a good behavior during the scan. I am able to use Firefly server on LAN and over internet with a local Rendezvous proxy. Works pretty well. Regards, banzai.
