Release notes state: "Since firmware v2.00.01, the option 'Add new disk as spare disk' has been removed." This seems to indicate to me that there is no longer a hot spare. This concept is reinforced by another statement: "RAID rebuild: in case one HDD failed in RAID 1, 5, 6, and 10 configuration, please hot unplug failed one and hot plug in new one. . . ."
Am I correct? I don't want to upgrade to 2.00.01 until this is clear in my mind.

I noticed that too in the docs - i cant figure out what it means. I am running this firmware and i HAVE added my fifth disk as a hot spare to an existing RAID5 (4 disks) 1 day ago. Works fine, reports as spare. All good. ;D ;D ;D

I started with my new N5200 Pro on firmware 2.00.01 a few days ago, having 4 disks installed, one as a hot-spare. So it's still possible with a new RAID-set and, as readable in previous post, with existing one(s).
Off-topic:Always thought that hot-spare(s) were powered off by default and in case of a disk crash would be powered on, but mine is running and also showing (different) activity all the time. Is that normal?

Yes rookie, that is normal. A hot-spare disk is always running to takeover immediatly in case of a failure of another working disk.
Look at wikipedia or google round for more information on raid concepts...
