I was hoping that Thecus would have included the fix for the email not going out in this update.
It seems that I still can't get it working or am I doing something wrong?

Do you receive e-mails when installing one of my modules?
Could you post (maybe again) what's still wrong?
Do you have SSH access to your N5200? In one of the threads I was posting a command with which you can test how to send e-mail so it is accepted by your mail server.
If you cannot find that posting please tell me and I'll try to find it again or I'll try to figure out again how it can be done.

I never posted what was wrong before, I read in your FAQ that notification was broken and just waited.
No I didn't get email for upgrading, or any other email from this unit.
I just don't get email.
I have tested all the send options.
Has anyone gotten notification to work with either qwest or Gmail?

sending to gmail works for me - however, I use my own mail server as relay for sending (via SMTP) and I had to tweak around a little bit to get the mails accepted as valid. If the mail server You are using checks for a valid return path, then it will not work as the mail adress for the notification mail is constructed as:
admin@nasname.domain
and usualy this is not accepted as a valid return path.
Most of the mailservers nowadays check for a valid return path, to avoid sending spams with faked mail adresses.

You nedd at least a mailserver to sent, this have not to be Your own one, but it helps because you may configure it to overcome the from adress issue. At the moment 2 different constructions of from adresses are used: 1) thecus istself uses admin@hostname.domain 2) omega uses in his modules thecus@hostname So if your hostname of the N5200 is nas01 and your configured domain is N5200.com the N5200 uses following adresses: admin@nas01.N5200.com and thecus@nas01 For sending an email, the N5200 tries to connect the mail server you have configured in the notification settings via SMTP and sends the mail to this server (usualy you have to have an account on the contacted server to send mails). Now it depens very much on the configuration of the mail server and/or the DNS configuration what happens - or more exact if the first mail server allows a relay of the mail. There are a few providers who allow relay of mails from identified users independant of the from adress, so no check is performed (but thats a clear security hole in the configuration) and there exists some completly open relay mail servers, which are mainly used from spammers. The easiest way, in my opinion would be if the from adress would be constructed only using the domain adress (admin@domain or thecus@domain), or if the from adress is completly configurable by the user. additional info for gmail: a direct sending via gmail would require a setting, which is not supported from N5200 (at least I have not found it): GMAIL username : OK GMAIL password : OK SMTP Server 'smtp.gmail.com' : OK SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL) : not supportedSMTP port 465 : OK br Peter |

Of course the best way would be if Thecus would offer a field where you can specify the full from address.
But everybody who still has problems with this issue, could you please write what the from address needs to look like so that we can provide some more information for Thecus?
I'll try to post a method so that you can check with some commands what from address is accepted by your mail transport agent (MTA).
But for this you will need SSH access to your N5200.....

There is another way to overcome at least the thecus status mail adress issue, but this works only if you have your own domain. Description: if You own the domain myname.com and your N5200 is named mynas, then talk to your DNS provider to add the record mynas.myname.com to the your DNS entry as a A record. This should also work with DynDns or other dynamic DNS providers. As there is always an A record available which is i.e. www.myname.com - so how you access your network - a possible solution would be to give the N5200 the hostname www omega : this is not working for the modules. I think the adress should only use the domain and not the host. That would be a solution for all adress issues (also for the thecus used adresses) br Peter |

the whole affair is rather confusing!
Different email providers seem to have different requirements for the from address. In case of Google you better not have a from email address with a domain as they use SPF to verify the senders IP against the domain listed. Google does change the from field anyhow, so no need to have a complete from address. On the other hand providers like gmx insist that the from field does contain their domain. Oh well!
As for SSL, that's a no-brainer. The command Thecus uses to send emails (msmtp) already provides support for SSL. All they have to do is add a button in the GUI to activate it.

it'd be easy for me to change the logevent script, but it canot be done META as the logevent script is in ROM area.
It is possible with my IMGDUP module which copies the /img/... directories to some place on the hard disk, but the IMGDUP approach is quite difficult to handle and it showed to be error prone.
So the only chance is to tell Thecus how to do it right.....

The infrant runs its own SMTP server and is absolutely trivial to get email working. Still this box. doesn't do snapshots doesn't work with my ups doesn't send notifications has no working power management... I was hoping in 6 months thecus would actively be supporting this ting but they are not. It was a poor choice despite its speed... Sean |

This may help for some, especially if you don't mind running your own SMTP server on the N5200. Thecus has an SMTP mail server module that you can install on the N5200. They don't list it anywhere, but it is included with the GPL source code. I haven't spent time configuring it, but it does install and seem to run when activated. If anyone wants to give it a try, it is located in the following location once you decompress the source code. I have only looked at the .07 and .08 source and it is in both.
\source\plug-in-modules\modules\n5200xmail.mod
If someone wants to give it a try and then report back, it might be one answer to the problem. Still would perfer if it was just fixed in the first place.
That being said, I have not had any problems with the email notification in 1.00.08, my ISP accept it just fine the way that it is now.
