Freescale MPC8347 266MHz 128MB DDR1 8MB flash 2.6.x Linux
BTW, I have just overclocked the core speed to 400MHz. The system is successfully up.

Finally, I bought the N1200. That is no easy way to use hdparm. You must connect the serial port at 115200 to run the hdparm. It is located at the /sbin/hdparm.
I can show you how to connect the N1200 serial port if you are interested.
BTW, the spin down is not very smooth. It will spin up right away, I guess I need to disable some HDD related application 1st.

Regarding powersave, use the hdparm executable. *path*/hdparm -S xxx I will tell the path after I buy the N1200, I haven't yet... xxx is the idle time. The hdparm works for all linux system with hdd.

N1200 has built in SSH. But you must use serial port to activiate it 1st. The path is /opt/....../sshd. You need to change the root password too, unless you know the factory root password.

What kind of Linux u are using ? If you haven't got GUI, you must mount the folder by yourself. I think all consumer grade NAS works similar. Some folks post the NFS module at this forum, so you can use Samba or NFS servers of the N1200.

The file system of N1200 is lxxxfs, I forgot the name Type "mount" will display the name of the active mount. "fsck" should be for ext2/3. Frankly, I never used it. Besides, not sure the N1200 busybox package comes along with it. If you want to explore the internal file system more, I suggest you change the root password at the serial console, and enable the SSH during power up. Then you can explore the N1200 over the network rather sitting next to the N1200 through serial cable.

Just back from a 6 day tour.
Seems that your problem is not trivial. The integrity of your file system looks messy. If you can identify which particular task causing the problem, (by typing "ps -aux") simply don't run it or kill it. But the chance is small.
The quick and dirty way is to let the wizard to reformat the hard disk again. Use FTP and wired connection to transfer large file, may have lower chance to corrupt your file system, because ftp is simpler protocol than samba+WinXP file transfer.

No wonder your firmware so updated at my 1st glance. You should move the thread to the N2100 (here is N1200) may get more appropriate attention.

I would classify the original fan into two noise level: 1. Powerup. About 20 second long duration. 2. Normal. I guess N1200 has speed control during normal opertaion. During powerup, the fan may run in full speed.
Before the original fan died, occasionally, the noise would reach case 1, very noticeable. Actually, very noisy.
Case 2 is acceptable, but noticeable. If 40mm is case 3, it is close to unnoticeable. BTW, I am using 2.5" HD internally, it is less noisy than 3.5"HD.

Most of the noise of my N1200 comes from the fan, because I am using 2.5" HDD. Last week, silence with occasional long beep alert replaced. Finally, I realized the fan dead. Which is good. I always want to improve the heat dissipation aggressively. See thecususergroup.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=n1200modifications&action=display&thread=1190353289I cannot find a good replacement. Then I used a 2 wire 40mm instead of the original 3 wire 25mm. Due to the wrong mounting hold pos, I glued the fan at the ventilation hole at the top instead of bottom. Now I know what "wasted" meant thecususergroup.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=n1200installations&action=display&thread=1186934842Then I realized that putting the replacement at the top is better than at the bottom. And I realized that 3 wire is absolutely necessary because N1200 will beep every half an hr for the missing rotation speed. Finally, I realized that 40mm is better than 25mm because it is less noisy in general. I got a second 40mm fan with 3 wire, "mount" (glue actually) at the top ventilation hole. The result is: Less noise, hotter exhausted air (higher ventilation efficiency). Before the modification, the fan speed is around 5XXX rpm, now is 2700 rpm in average.

Agree. If the HDD is electrically secured, the HDD LED (blue) will light up for at least half sec during power up. Adjusting the screw position should help if the HDD LED doesn't light up. Besides, one issue for long beep alert is the fan dead. If the system cannot detect a reasonable rotation speed of the fan, it will issue long beep every half an hr. I have replaced a two wire fan with the existing fan 3 wire fan, N1200 will beep every half an hr. And the rotation speed is 11rpm, which may be an offset value.

Can you ping the N1200 ? The factory default is 192.168.1.100. I suppose your notebook/PC is in 192.168.1.x segment.
