Hi. My TheCus cannot be accessed. The whole process started when I attempted to update the firmware through the Internet Explorer and it "failed to update." I tried several times and got the same response. Our power went out and backup battery failed. However, at no time did the power go out when the progress bar was showing. It happened after an unsuccessful firmware upgrade attempt. I contacted tech support from the company where we purchased the unit and they emailed me files and instructions on how to upgrade the firmware via a usb storage unit. So I performed the process and it ugraded the firmware successfully. I have re-run the setup wizard successfully. I can ping the unit with good response times. Tech support sent me here because their system engineer didn't know what else to tell me. My setup info is as follows:
Host Name: N5200 WAN IP: 192.168.1.100 LAN IP: 192.168.2.100 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 DNS: 192.168.1.1 Mac Address: 00-14-FD-10-48-F4 Broadcast: 192.168.1.255 LAN Port: LAN 1 Model Name: N5200 Firmware Version: 1.00.07
Any ideas as to how I can get the TheCus back on my "workgroup" and how I can access the unit via the internet explorer?

Have you tried factory reset from the LCD? If you hadn't set the password I believe you just press enter (it puts all 0's) until you get the menu. Otherwise, I read in the manual somewhere that you can hold the reset button for 15 seconds when it boots to reset to default? Not sure on that one, I'd look it up if I had to do it. In your scenario this is the first thing I'd try. It sounds like both web services are disabled or apache didn't start at all. If you're successful in resetting to factory or whatever they do call it, remember to reboot once you've done it or else you'll bang your head on the wall trying to get in .

I did a factory reset from the LCD panel after I upgraded the firmware. Since then, I have done 3 hard resets and ran the setup wizard several times with no luck. I'm at the point of just buying another NAS box. The boards here are right - tech support from Thecus is non-existent.

Thanks for all of your replies . I was sent the "factory_testsh" and the lastest bin 1.00.07 by some great guys over at Aegis. They also emailed me a PDF file with instructions. I placed both the factory_testsh and new bin files on a usb "thumb" drive, powered off the Thecus, inserted the usb drive, tunred the unit on and the update successfully installed and the unit did a factory reset. This, however, did not solve my problem. I have tried to access the Thecus from 4 different comps. on the network with no success. I also tried running the setup wizard on all 4 - no luck. What's so odd is that when the setup wizard begins, it "discovers" the Thecus just fine...the ip is correct, subnet correct, gateway, etc. What's so odd is that I can still ping the unit. What should I do now? Thanks again for all of you taking the time to read this post and reply with answers.

What would happen if I took the factory_testsh file and the oldest bin listed on thecus.com and tried installing. Will putting the machine in a retrospective state maybe help?
BTW - I've called tech support from thecus several times and sent several emails with no reply. I can understand that they are taking some time off for the Chinese Holiday - from what I understand it's as big as Christmas and New Years in the US and everybody needs time off work. Maybe they will respond when they get back.

No, even more... Chinese new year is christmas, new year and eastern together and for about one week almost nobody works.... So in this special case we really need to be patient.... But anyway, Thecus support is really weak to be diplomatic and Thecus should hurry up to change this.... Andreas

I've doing some reading across the boards and it looks like my web service is not starting. I've read how some people accessed the Thecus by using Putty. I've dowloaded the program but cannot connect. The default port in Putty is 22 - is this correct for the Thecus? Is there anything else I should know about how to connect with Putty? I've read some posts that describe how to get the web service started again and would like to try.

Sure, putty is fine, no special settings needed as a default....
Did you install the SSHD and SYSUSER modules.... ?

Oh no, I didn't install them. Without this installed, I cannot access the Thecus via SSH. Correct?

Oh well...it was a good thought....haha I think I'm going to send another email to Thecus tech support. Another person I know was having the exact same problem as I. He also used the "factory_testsh" file and 1.00.07 firmware usb upgrade without success. But get this...he said he simply renamed the bin to 1.00.05 and it worked. Now he has no problems with is box! I haven't had a chance to try this yet but plan on it tonight...I'll post if I have any luck! Thanks for everyone taking the time to read this post and give advice

Ok guys...finally good news ;D ...My box is now back online. I did what another guy told me worked for him - renamed the 1.00.07 bin file name to 1.00.05. This is the second occassion where this method has worked. Why? Who knows. But I can now access the unit through the web gui. The setup wizard, however, will not discover the Thecus. I don't see this as a problem since the web gui allows access to the unit. The "status, about" section does reflect the 1.00.07 bin and I've had a little over 30 minutes uptime. Since this box was used for my business, I had to purchase another one shortly after the incident happened. We didn't have any of the data backed up. We learned a lesson the hard way. This time I purchased an N2100 for backup purposes only. I am having a hard time finding good backup software that will let me backup the data on the N5200 to the N2100. Will keep looking - any suggestions? I can't fully test the unit as I have no drives installed. Since my raid was in tact, I swapped the drives from the old one (now fixed ) into the new. I hope to install at least 3 drives and set up on raid 5 stripping. Will post results when I have the money to do this.

you can try second copy at: www.secondcopy.com/you can set a profile up on a computer to make exact copies of directories on the main box to a backup box. Have it run once a day or every hour. If the main box goes down, you can just use the backup box. Mike

Thanks for the advice! Program works great. I like it better than Acronis or Backup Premium
