Purchased a N5200BR Sunday and have finally gotten it to where I can access the disks with Suse Linux 10.2, Mac OSX, and Winxp, but have problems viewing the files and folders them selves.
I can see the files I copied to Disk1 and the usbhdd only if I let the system do an automatic mount and this is a hit or miss process.
If I do an NFS client mount, see the disks, but no files. Winxp sees the disks and I can logon, but does not show the files, only the partitions. The Mac is the same as the Winxp and Linux the konqueror set for smb:/ I can browse to the Disk 1, but not see the files, only the files on Disk1 that I copied there are available.
My understanding that all of the files would be available to NFS, CIFS, & SMB, is this triue?
Any suggestions on what is going on would be most welcome.

Hi afore, welcome here.... I don't understand what problem you're describing.... So you connect an USB disks the the N5200 and you can see one (or all) of its partitions as /raid/data/usbhdd/something.... ? And what do you mean with "the automatic mount is a hit or miss process"? I can get the basic meaning but I need more details..... Andreas

Using Suse 10.2, it automatically logs on the disk I guess when it sees it and it is in the fstab file. I shows up has Disk, Disk1 and Disk-1 in /media after quite awhile. Not sure what the mechanizim is for this. I can then see files on the disks.
I have the NFS client entries for N5200Disk1, N5200usbhdd, but when I try to mount them when they show up on MyComputer, which is Konqueror, system:/, it comes up permission denied, even if I have it set for anyone to browse in the webbrowser admin page.
The Mac and windows logins work and can click on the disk, but it shows no files. The usbhdd has two partitions, and ext3 and fat32, but none of the files show up in either case with WinXP or OSX. I did have the files show up in OSX one time sunday, but since then, not. That is the confusing part.

Hello Guys... Well first and most a nice compliment to omega, who is the "The Master of Thecus Universe". Thanks 4 all the excellent work done so far, in favor of The Thecus Community. Well i'm having the same exact problem. Added 2 USB disks, FAT and NTFS drives, and can browse the mount point but they don't show files in them. I'm accessing via Windows XP. It shows \\N5200\usbhdd\sfd1 and \\N5200\usbhdd\sfd2 but no files in them. This is Strange.. cause if it mounts the drives.. it should show the contents in them, right Another thing weird is that after 5 min. or so, the usb drive connected to one of the rear usbs, does even show up as a mount point, and it's still connected Any Help would be welcome. Best Regards to all Sergio

Hi Sergio, thank you for your nice words and welcome to this forum... I've just tried what you and Art are reporting..... and unfortunately I cannot reproduce that So we need to find out what's going on by imagination.... Do you have ssh access to the device? Do you know how to enter commands in the unix shell. What are your Linux skills? What firmware do you use actually? Andreas

I now have Disk1 so I can see the files in Linux, Windows, & Maac OSX. However, there is something strange with usbhhd. At one time, I could see the 3 drives, but not all partitions in WinXP, MaxOSX, but in Linux I had to use smb//192.168.1.100/usbhdd, could not use smb://N5200/usbdd when trying to browse to it. I rebooted, not things are completely different. I can still see Disk1 in all 3 operating systems, and can see usbhdd, but now the 3 disks and 5 partitions show up, but cannot see any files in them. This is the same with smb or NFS now.
I have done SSH into the 5200 and looked around, but could not find anything where this might be configured. /raid/data/usbhdd shows the 3 disks with 5 partitions, but again, no files. This indicates to me the problem is in the N5200 and not the operating systems. Partitions are a mixture of Fat32, NTFS, and EXT3.
Probably the next time I reboot, it will be something different. Any suggestions on what I can check with the SSH on the N5200? I am experience in Linux, but no expert.

Hi Art, hi Sergio, I can reproduce the problem now and I quite sure to know what's going wrong.... If you do the following command ls -l /raid/data/usbhddthen you'll see that the permission for the mounted NTFS partition is something like " dr-x------". This means only root can read or set the contents of that mount point. The same should /partially apply to the other mountpoints. This is due to a bug Thecus has in its usb.hotplug script. When doing the mount operation, they need to specify the "umask=" flag. thecus: please fix this.... So if you have ssh access, then try the following steps: 1) We assume the mountpoint for the partition on the USB drive is sdg2 2) Type just mount and you should see that /dev/sdg2 is mounted to /raid/data/usbhdd/sdg2 3) Call: umount /raid/data/usbhdd/sdg2 4) Call: mount -o umask=0 /dev/sdg2 /raid/data/usbhdd/sdg2 Now you should be able to see that partition in the windows share usbhdd and you should be able to see all the files in all the subdirectories. Of course you can do the same commands for all other partitions. I could tell you where to correct the usb.hotplug script if someone is interested. But for this you need the IMGDUP module installed. I still have no idea why Sergio has the problem that the shares are disappearing after 5 mins. Hope that helped you.... Andreas

That works for sdd1, sdf1, & sdf5, but not for sde5 & sde6.
If I remember correctly, sde5 & sde6 are ext3 partitions. Also, the fix worked only for smb, not ntfs.

Should have included this in the previous reply, but here is the output from ls -l after the umount and mount commands.

If I install the imgdump and change the script, how would I load the back in?

Hi Art, 1) About the IMGDUP module: this module creates a copy of /img and when enables relinks /img to this copy. So whenever accessing any file below /img/... in fact you're edting the file in the cloned directory. You won't be abled to edit that file in it's original place as /img is mounted read-only and cannot be mounted read-write. 2) In order to tell you something why some of the mount points are working now and some not I need at least the output of the "mount" command (together with the output of the "ls" command). You are right, the umask= argument to mount is only available for fat, vfat and ntfs. For ext2, ext3 and reiserfs they shouldn't be needed though. You should be able to see the files below sde5 and sde6.... Try to go into /raid/data/usbhdd/sde5 and do a "ls" there. What do you see then? Do the same in sde6. Andreas

Some success at last. The problem with the usb disk that would not mount is that the disk is bad, went bad from one day to the next. Seems the electronics is OK, but the disk does not spin.
Printer is working, can access Disk1 with SMB or NFS with Linux, Windows, & MacBook. Only problem is the NFS does not work on the USB drives, but SMB does, so I can live with that until Thecus fixes it. Only other problem is the MacBook backup disk image utility does not work, but I think that is a MacBook problem. It comes back that the disk is busy, but I can copy files etc from the MacBook to Disk1 and also from WinXP running under Parallels on the Mac.
Thanks for the help from Omega and all.

Hi Art, fine that almost everything works now! But the last open item is solvable too..... Each of the mount points (directories) in /raid/data/usbhdd need to be exported for NFS! It is not sufficient just to export /raid/data/usbhdd. Unfortunately Thecus also hasn't done this in their usb.hotplug script (Thecus: maybe you want to do something here too ). So if you're interested in accessing your USB disks via NFS, just a simple modification of /etc/exports is needed: 1) For each directory in /raid/data/usbhdd add a line to /etc/exports which looks like this one: /raid/data/usbhdd/sde1 *(rw,no_root_squash,sync)2) After editing the export file you need to tell the NFS daemon to reload it by issuing this command: /app/bin/rc/nfs reload3) Now you're able to mount the partition on the USB disk e.g. with this command on a linux computer: mount n5200:/raid/data/usbhdd/sde1 /mntThat's it Andreas EDIT: fixed a typo

OK, that works, but only if I do it from the command line. If I do it via the NFS Client setup in Yast on Suse, it does not. I tried putting the options in as you had, it comes up that it does not recognize no_root_squash.
I have another question that is not quite clear, but it is on a different subject so I will start a new thread.

Hi Art, sure the options are not working for a NFS client as they are options for the NFS server..... The options I told you are only for the /etc/exports file which is in fact the configuration file for the NFS server. You don't need any special mount options for the client. Or did I miss something... Andreas
