A.) You can use Samsungs but you have to get special Beta firmware to run them. So its possible, but I wouldnt advise it till they get normal firmware operating with them. B.) You can leave the drives as is if you want. The setting is called JBOD (Just a bunch of disks). But why buy a nas if you dont want Raid? You could do a much cheaper option with external Sata enclosures and a USB hub? Unless you want module support etc.....Odd request I suppose

I found the list located here: www.thecus.com/download/other/N5200HDDCompatibilityReport-950911.pdfbut this does not include the current firmware version I am at which is : Firmware Version 1.00.08 Does anyone have an updated list for this? Also, I just want to buy one (1) disk to replace the one which is degrading. Is there any issue with having that setup or should I go ahead and buy all new disks? Thanks.

And your firmware is actually a couple of revisions down... 2.00.10 is the current release, and I'm running 2.00.11.2 pre-release because of the issues with Samsung drives in 2.00.10. But as the old motto says, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Just replace the dead disk, that's the whole point of RAID. If you replace all of them you'll loose your data unless you do them one at a time and let it rebuild in between. I have replied to your other thread on the issue. The only reason to replace all of them would be if you wanted more capacity. So you'd buy a load of bigger disks, swap them one at a time letting the 5200 rebuild the new disk into the array each time before changing the next (probably swapping one disk a day), and then once all the drives in the array have been swapped to the larger disks, tell the 5200 to expand the array into the unused space on the drives.

i'm a bit ignorant as to what to replace. I am new to whole world of SAN storage devices.
I did a quick search on the device (disk) part number and got all sorts of results that show me an internal SATA drive. Obviously, this is not what I want. I need one of those hot-swapable kind.
Any thoughts on that?

thanks for your help tank.
Now, how do I figure out which disk is failing? I know it say's "number 4" from the admin console, but I don't know which one that corresponds to on the drive. (NS5200)
Furthermore, should I upgrade the firmware? it's a bit out of date (1.0.8)
Thanks.

(NS5200) Furthermore, should I upgrade the firmware? it's a bit out of date (1.0.8) Thanks. They're numbered from the top, you've got 5 drive bays on the 5200... So 4 is second from the bottom. I've not had one fail, so I can't vouch for exactly what indication you get from the drive bays themselves, you have a green light that shows the drive being accessed, and the blue that shows when the drive is on. I don't know if the blue light turns off when the drive fails or not. If you access files on the 5200 and watch the green lights, you should see they all all flicker except for number 4, this shows that the 5200 is not reading or writing anything from number 4, so that would confirm it thinks the drive is faulty and not worth talking to. I'd get the drive changed first, save the firmware update for another day when the RAID is rebuilt and everything is running normally.

I can no longer confirm which disk(s) are degarding. In the status section it just says "DEGRADED".
Why doesn't it give the previous information? Is it getting worse?

OK, well, the upgrade is complete and the N5200 seems to have no problem with the WD 1TB EcoDrives. I've already added the drive to the compatibility list on the Wiki. is the WD10EACS now supported for the N5200? I cant find it in any thecus list

Maybe you people allready are aware of this, but I've read that the Seagate 7200.11 harddisk series have a firmware problem that makes the disk undetectable for a system. The data will still remain on the disks, but a firmware update should be done to prevent this. Check : techreport.com/discussions.x/16246Don't know if this is also the fix for the Thecus N5200 with these types of disks but maybe it will be the cause of it.

Hi I'm looking to run a 5 drive RAID5 array, using WD Caviar Green 1TB drives (WD10EACS). Is this supported at all, or will I possibly run into problems? (all the reviews I've read state that the max supported HDD size is 750GB). Torn between this and the Q-NAP TS-409 Pro at the moment.....
Thanks
