I have a WD4000YR setup as JBOD in my N2100, and this has about 300Gb of data on it.
I now want to add a second WD4000YR into the existing JBOD for a max 800Gb space, without losing the data on the 1st drive. How?
Having physically installed the drive and rebooted, web mgt shows both drives as Status OK, and read the max 800Gb space, but my original folders have disappeared, and I can't log on as a user, only as admin...
Wassup?

OK, after emails with Thecus support this is now fixed.
Background: I had installed my first drive in the top slot of the chassis, which the software recognises as Disk2. When I then tried to put the new drive in the bottom slot, it detects as Disk1 and tries to be the primary drive, hence my folders disappear. Also, when looking at Storage / RAID / Config, the RAID options area all clear - JBOD should be pre-selected as this is what my original drive is set up for.
Solution: move the original drive to the bottom slot so it recognises as Disk 1. When the new drive is inserted in the top slot and is recognised as Disk2, select Storage / RAID / Config; the JBOD radio button will already be selected and greyed out, and the RAID check box for Disk1 will be selected and greyed out. Tick the RAID box to the right of Disk2 and click Create.
Takes a while to check and re-size, but the disk is now in and I have the full space available.

I had a WD400 in my 2100 in the bottom slot as per the directions from the initial setup months ago. Well, today I added a WD320GB HDD to the upper slot. I then checked to add it to the current JBOD and it NOT ONLY FAILED - IT KILLED 366 GIGS OF DATA OFF my original WD400 HDD. WTF? I am pissed! I have backups of data from MAY 06 so I only losted around 6GIGs worth of data. Thank GOD I don't rely on THECUS products to work as advertised.
You need to ensure you back up your NAS anytime you are adding or removing drives. However, you should also back up your NAS reguardless.
Hope this helps.

If I were to understand this correctly, imagine if one of your drives (disk 1) had died in a RAID 1 configuration. You replace it, only to find that the software just wipes your only remaining drive... and all this happens because you didn't know that the system always blows away Disk2.......
