Authentication is for you when you want to authenticate users on our NT server. So you have to make sure your DNS can resolve "smbserver", or better yet, you can just enter the IP address of "smbserver".
If you can post the English error message, then probably more people can help out.

I hope this reply is not too late. I just bought a thecus n4100plus and had the same problem. My email to their support has not been addressed. In the meantime this is the solution I figured out. In the "ADS/NT Realm" box, (in your case I presume this is the "ADS Bereich") enter the domain portion of your DNS and not the "nt domain" name. I know this is confusing, but unlike ADS, NT-authentication does not have a realm. After doing this, the authentication is now working. One more reason is that: You are already entering the "NT domain" name in the "Workgroup" ("Arbeitsgruppe", in your case) box above, so it seemed odd that you are made to enter the same info twice.

Hi guys. I'm still a bit stuck on the whole ADS/NT thing My Windows 2003 DNS Server name is "ballaratfs" and the IP address is 192.168.128.12. The domain is BALLARAT.LOCAL So in the Thecus 5200 I'm entering: Work Group/Domain Name: BALLARAT.LOCAL ADS/NT Support: Enabled Authentication Method: ADS ADS/NT Server Name: ballaratfs (also tried 192.168.128.12) ADS/NT Realm: ballarat.local (also tried ballaratfs) User: xxxx Pass: xxxx Confrim: xxxx Can somebody please help! Here is the error message: Error : ADS server or ADS realm error (maybe DNS server cannot resolve the name). Error : Fail to join ADS domain!PS - I have entered the DNS as 192.168.128.12 in the WAN connection too.

Hi, If you are not using IPs, you must check that the NAS can resolve the DNS name (use ssh module to check if you cannot tell). 1. In Work Group/Domain put the netbios domain name (ballarat). 2. In ADS/NT Realm put the complete domain name (ballarat.local). 3. Ballaratfs must be a domain controller (not only a dns server) and must have the authentication role in ADS. 4. You need to use an account that is allowed to join the domain (user account with delegation or create an account for the nas in AD). Usually it has administrators rights (but not mandatory). The error message may be generic or really related to name resolution. I cannot tell. Ed PS: does a 'ping ballarat.local' on your PC work ? PS: The images don't display in the forum

Thanks for the information.
I cannot ping ballarat.local from my PC, so I think that is the reason why it isn't working on the NAS setup.
