When backing up the 4200 NAS to external eSATA disks with OSX app packages present, I found that the timed backup process was sitting in CHMOD and using 99.9% CPU ie one entire CPU core basically forever. It appears that the backup module does a chmod 777 to all the files on the backup disk after the main sync is completed - it is here that the backup locks up.
So I killed this CHMOD process and manually executed the CHMOD command (after a ps | rep CHMOD so see what syntax was being used) and thus was able to see the errors - many many errors - on the console. (yeh I should have checked the logs I suppose)
The problem was recursive sym links in many of the OSX .app packages that were in the NAS file store.
To bypass this issue, I zipped the offending packages up and deleted the .app version on the NAS file store and on the backup disk and manually did a CHMOD again and all is kooel now. The scheduled backup now completes with no issue.
So if you have a locking up eSata (or USB) scheduled backup and you use OSX, do not store application packages on the NAS box - only store zipped up copies and all will be well.
