I understand that RAID Mirgration and Expansion support users to go from RAID 1 to RAID 5 etc...
However it that also means it does support there I currently have a 3 1TB HDD RAID 5 and u can also add hard drives as you go.....without formating the harddrive?? so I can just add more harddrives as I go?

But completely backup your data before you do... And brace yourself for a shock... I set up 3 x 1TB drives as raid 5 so I could get on and use my new 5200Pro, the intention was to then add the other 2 drives I had also purchased and get it to migrate. Migrate not only takes an age (estimate was about a week), but it takes the 5200 offline! As I'd only copied, not moved my files to the 5200, I cancelled this (no cancel button, had to be nasty and pull drives, turn it off etc), and then put all 5 in and get it to build a fresh raid, which took about 22 hours instead. I do hope they resolve the need to take the NAS offline for a migrate, as offline for a week is just not on! (A day is just about the limit). So as you've followed zarnsmith's advice and done a backup, delete you entire raid config, insert the new drives, build the new bigger raid, and copy the data back from your backup. It will be faster!

yep, they go offline for part of the process (the big part).
I did think at this point that it had all gone horribly wrong....but sure enough 12 hrs later they were back on line with all data intact.
and yes it is much quicker/safer to backup everything, rebuild the array from scratch and then migrate the data back to the nas....but you CAN do a migration if you want/need to.

I personally have migrated from 3 drives to 4 and then 5.
Then I expanded from 250GB to 320GB.
It takes time, but it's doable.
Right now, I'm moving to 3 1.5 TB drives. The only way to do that is copy the data elsewhere, and build a new array with the newer drives.
