I am having a lot of trouble trying to set up the FTP. Can someone help?
In the N2100 I have enabled FTP, encoding ISO, port 21. Port 21 on my router is open and pointing to the internal IP of N2100. I've created a user and a group and given this user write permission to a folder I created.
If I access via ftp using WS_FTP home I can get through and see the folders, read and write etc. but with filezilla, or any other FTP client, I cant get it to work. It is connecting in passive mode.
As you may have guessed, I am quite new to all this.
Also, should you be able to connect to the N2100 via ftp using the inbuilt FTP client in Windows Explorer?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I have noticed that if i make disable public access to the folder I created, I cannot connect via WS_FTP either.
It just goes through a loop of disconnecting:
"Status: Retrieving directory listing... Command: PWD Response: 257 "/" is your current location Command: TYPE A Response: 200 TYPE is now ASCII Command: PASV Error: Disconnected from server Error: Could not retrieve directory listing Error: Timeout detected! "
Could this be something to do with the root password? I updated the firmware to the latest but did not reset any passwords..
Again, I'm new to this. Any help would be much appreciated.

In the Firmware upgrade procedure it says the following:
NOTE: Please go to System > Config Mgmt to save your configuration. New version of firmware will not work with configuration file from previous versions of firmware.
When I go to config mgmt, it asks to upload a file, but I couldn't find this file anywhere. So I guess I haven't updated the config mgmt.
Could this have anything to do with it?

Hi condorman, given the logs it looks like either your firewall or your operating system does not handle passive mode ftp connections, e.g. ports > 1023 are most likely blocked. To know more about the subject have a look at this article slacksite.com/other/ftp.html. It's a rather common issue. On Mac OS X most users enable the built in firewall but forget to enable passive mode ftp connections in the network proxy section. Also most cheap routers do not recognize passive mode ftp connections and you therefore have to resort to some drastic measures, e.g. limit the allowed port numbers for the ftp server and open those ports on the firewall. getmythe

Hi getmythe,
Thanks for the reply. When you say the firewall or operating system doesn't handle passive ftp connections, do you mean the os if the computer with the client trying to connect from outside? Sorry if this is a dumb question..
I got a response from Thecus Tech Support, but they didn't help yet. Just went thru the setup, which I seem to have correct on the N2100. The sent a module to upload but this didn't help.
I am using an Apple Extreme N router, but there is another router that is in bridged mode that gives it its intenet connection. The problem may have something to do with this setup! Not sure.

Try an isolation test. Just computer and n2100 and if you can't get it to work then you know that it's not your router that's the problem.
You can then look at your computer.
You haven't really said what you're trying to do.
Are you trying to access the n2100 on your LAN or from the WAN?
If it's just the LAN then why are you routing and opening ports?
If it's the WAN then you need to confirm that everything works on the LAN first before you open it up to the WAN.

Hi dbridges,
I'm trying to set it up so that I can access it from the WAN.
When I ftp into the N2100 to its static internal IP address from my computer from within the LAN it works fine, but my trouble is trying to connect from outside.
I seem to have the N2100 set up correctly for FTP and connecting from within the LAN seems to confirm this! But I'm not sure.
I have 2 routers, a Netopia 3347NWG, and an apple extreme draft n ( which I got so I could have faster wireless speed.)
Firts I had the netopia ( which has built in modem) set up in bridged mode and the apple n was acting as router. In this set up I was able to make a connection to the FTP on N2100 but it would only get as far as accepting the username and password (from the WAN) Then the N2100 would not communicate back and the connection dropped.
Now I have set up the Netopia as the router with the apple as access point only. I have the N2100 connected directly into the Netopia router (so the apple should be irrelavent no?). I set up ports 20 & 21 to point to the static IP of the N2100, but now, I can't even connect to the N2100 at all from outside., It's as if the WAN IP address doesn't exist!
Thanks for your help!.

With the apple now out of the picture you have two places to look. The first is the configuration of the Netopia and the second it your internet service provider. Go through the config of the Netopia carefully to make sure that you didn't miss anything in the setup. Check that your ISP isn't blocking any network ports or upstream traffic by default. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help.
You were right, there was a setting in the netopia for remote access to the admin page of the router. When I turn this on I can access via ftp and http to the N2100.
It is an odd way for netopia to have the firmware set up, as even if I turned off the firewall completely, you still cant even ping the WAN ip address unless you enalble this remote access.
Anyway, all solved. Next on to getting DDNS, which isn't an option on the firmware in the netopia.. And also back to see why the Apple didn't let it work..
But that, as they say, is another story..
Cheers.
