If the Thecus itself stops working, can I take one of the disks from a RAID1 and put it in my PC running Windows XP and use the data on it?
I assume there will be some issues with the filesystem and perhaps the way Thecus formats the disk or the RAID1?

Yes but you'll need to boot that pc using a bootable linux cd. I've personally found systemrestorecd www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page to work and recommend it because it has SATA support where most bootable linux versions dont.

Hmm okay will systemrestorecd then enable me to move the data to another harddisk formatted in NTFS for instance?
Also, will I be able to get a replacement Thecus and insert the RAID1 disks into it without having to reformat them?

Hmm okay will systemrestorecd then enable me to move the data to another harddisk formatted in NTFS for instance? Yes. systrescd can see your NTFS drives. I have actually used it to perform this task so i do know what i'm talking about Also, will I be able to get a replacement Thecus and insert the RAID1 disks into it without having to reformat them? I would recommend synchronising the firmware first but the answer is "Yes" Has your thecus stopped working or are you just doing your homework before buying one???

I'm sitting here with a Maxtor Shared Storage Plus which cannot even turn on and have hence lost appx. 400 GB of data. I now think that I have lost enough data in my time and want a proper backup solution!

I now think that I have lost enough data in my time and want a proper backup solution! Bummer Well in that case the thecus is ideal. There was a little like/dislike thread a while back. Basically the hardware is great. It's VERY tweakable. However support isn't the best but that doesn't matter too much because the forums are great. It can run a bit hot and make a bit of noise which can be annoying but it's small enough to stick in a cupboard somewhere if noise becomes an issue. Buying quiet and cool drives should help alleviate this problem. There are known issues with some Western Digital Drives. You will need to update the drive firmware before putting them in the n2100. I recommend getting a gigabit switch if you don't already have one. And whatever you do as soon as the disks are installed and formatted you should install the SSH module from the Wiki.

I have a dedicated closet for all my routers, servers and other gadgets so the noise shouldn't be too big of an issue. It's more the heat dissipation that I worry about as the closet do tend to get a bit hot. What exactly does SSH do? And this paragraph somehow worries me: If you are not familar with Linux please be aware that logging in as root with SSH will allow you to corrupt the entire N2100. If you don't know what you are doing, then you better find another Linux box to play around with. as my Linux skills are as good as a fish's biking skills

SSH allows you to log in to a linux command prompt as the root user and do "anything" That's not to say that you must use it. Just install it If anything does go wrong with firmware or some other problem and you need it it's better to have it available than not. Things have gone awry for a couple of people already and SSH helped (or would have helped) imeasurably It's a backup plan. Just in case...

Also note the Western Digital drive problems are not a Thecus only issue - it is a problem with Linux RAID's in general so would be true in other products similar to the Thecus
Probably worst thing about the Thecus is the poor heat transfer desing - this is born out by all the mods (photos under mods part of forum) that people have done to try and make it cooler - that said I have not yet braved the Dremel to cut my box up and put a bit fan on it and it does run fine - since later firmwares fixed the drive spindown issue with Seagate drives (which I have) it is a lot cooler
