Many thanks dbridges for replying to my post.
This is a quick reply but I will follow up on all the points you raise.
The unit is no longer under warranty so there is room to move.
I had contacted Thecus about the failure after upgrading but they simply sent the instructions for the factory reset procedure. I have not contacted Thecus with the information I presented in my first post.
On the isolation test, I have connected to the unit by this method since the problem started. Details are: PC with 2 network cards one set to IP of 192.168.0.10 and connected directly to the 2100 with an IP of 192.168.0.20 I use a straight through cable rather than a cross over cable. I'm told the ethernet port on the 2100 can auto sense straight through or crossover. In any case I assume that one couldn't ping or ftp to the 2100 if the cable was no good.
With this setup I have been through the diagnostic flow chart as outlined in the user manual ie with no discs installed.
1. As mentioned the factory settings reset procedure does not work - by that I mean the setup program cannot find the 2100. If I then reboot normally the unit can be found by the setup program with the old IP address.
2. During normal bootup the busy lead flashes for 120 seconds and then the unit beeps. As mentioned can ping and ftp to the unit.
I'm not sure from the diagnostic flow chart whether the firmware is corrupted or the motherboard is bad (sic) or both. The busy lead does keep blinking but only for 2 minutes, not more than 3 minutes as mentioned. However, the admin webpage looks like it is not accessible.
But why can I ping and ftp to it?
With https I assume you mean
192.168.0.20 With this or the normal
192.168.0.20 the response is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" from the browser.
I think I have the IP address issue okay. What information on ports should I know about?
