For the life of me, I can't get the device to work properly with email. If i don't have DNS settings entered, I can click on the test email button and a message pops up saying an email was sent. No email arrives. If I have DNS settings entered and click on the test email button, I get no popup message and don't get any emails.

For what it is worth, I am getting similar results.
I even tried opening up port 25 (the send mail port) on the IP address on my firewall. All with similar results .... email message pops up, but no message comes through ... AND no information in the log
The "Auth Type" setting doesn't seem to make a difference either ...
Have you had any luck with this since you last posted?

yep, you need to manually enter your DNS. The nas seems not to pick it up automatically.
Also, if you were to use the download manager without setting the DNS (unless your download from an IP source) it does not work.
This happened on both my unit, and a friends.

Even when entered manually it doesn't work. The test button doesn't return anything as if the message was sent, but it never arrives.

Some email account providers doesn't allow usage of smtp protocol if the sender (your nas) have an unreachable source adress ip into the ip sending frame (like commonly your nas is 192.168.X.X which is not available from the wan).
For example, if your nas is behind your router, the smtp.mail.yahoo.com provider doesn't work but the smtp.mail.yahoo.fr do, because it doesn't check the sender ip.

Ah, than I know why I got no problems. I got an own server and this only checks the username and password.

So if I open the SMTP port on the router and pointed it to the IP of the NAS would it work?

Ähm, this is the wrong way. You want to sent emails not get it from the internet. So you dont have to open any ports on your router for the email option.

Wouldn't all the computers on my network that are behind my firewall router have the same problem?
ie. they are all assigned IP addesses that are unreachable from the outside ... how is the NAS any different?

This only works when connection is via WAN, not LAN. E-mail notifications via WAN work correct with my system.
