I'd love to be able to monitor my box via snmp - Throughput on the Ethernet-Interfaces, but also the RAID-Status and/or individual Disk Status and %free on filesystems....

Just this weekend I realised my wishlist entry is very closely linked to this SNMP request. My wish is: Now, in the spirit of helping myself, I started looking around for solutions that I could attempt to implement. I found this Net-SNMP net-snmp.sourceforge.net/ which looks like it'll be easy enough to set up on the N5200, but it looks more like a client type tool rather that giving the N5200 the ability to report SNMP stats. Does anyone know whether it is possible to enable SNMP reporting on the N5200, or is it a kernel recompile job? MRTG looks to be written in Perl so porting that over with a requirement for Omega's PERL module should be relatively easy. It's just the SNMP abilities of the Thecus that seems to be in question. Would love to hear the communities thoughts.

Hi...
An snmp-agent on a system is normally just a process running and responding to requests on an UDP-port.
So I guess its just to put a few files on the box and trigger them to start to get an SNMP-agent running for monitoring.
What could cause problems is that the 5200 might have specieal hw and that there isn't any ready to use agent around.
Then it means having a custom built one, that can serve the parameters and values you/we find interesting to monitor......

Hi, OK - I see, you're impatient..... As I was writing at some other place the netsnmp software is already installed on the N5200 starting with 1.00.06.5 in the directory /opt/netsnmp. But Thecus hasn't created any configuration file yet. But if you want to give the SNMP daemon a try, just issue this command on the command line: /opt/netsnmp/sbin/snmpd -r -f -L -C --rocommunity=publicand now you should be able to see the basic system values when connecting with a snmp client (I use look@lan for this, freely available ). The "-f" flag prevents the snmp daemon from going to the background so just hit ctrl-c to stop it again. So if someone want's to volunteer and create a more sophisticated snmpd.conf file (check the netsnmp project page for howto's) then we don't need to wait until Thecus does it.... Hope this helps you somehow..... Andreas

Andreas, yet again, you impress!
It wasn't a question of a lack of patience, it was a question of dabbling around to see what I might be able to do and asking for commentary.
As it turns out it looks like spare time is going to be hard to come by for the next few months as I have a big new project at work. Great for my career, but not so good as far as being able to contribute here much for a while. But we'll see.

Hi, just saw this that SNMP seems to be almost finished even with HTML configuration..... Try this link: http://your-n5200/adm/getform.html?name=snmp Enable the SNMP daemon and fill out the entries. For comunity it'd the best to use "public". After pressing "Apply" a snmp config file /etc/snmpd.conf will be written and the snmp daemon is (re-)started. Don't know why Thecus hasn't released that feature in 1.00.07 because it seems to work without problems (yet). Have fun.... Andreas

Thank you thank you thank you.
I've been wanting to run SNMP since I got this thing and now we are up and running.
Also a big thank you to Omega for all your hard work on the Mods.

Activated the built-in snmp-agent.
It seems to feed my MRTG with good values about trafic in/out ;D

Good to hear that... but not surprising though as these numbers are cheap to get.... I'd like to see more statistics to be available in SNMP and I still wonder why Thecus still didn't release the SNMP feature officially. But as long as it runs unofficially why bother.... you see, I'm fighting with myself... Andreas

snmp cannot be configured in the WebUI - it is disabled from sysconfX.txt and that is what the message tells you ;o) Only syslog can be enabled that way.

Hi fajo, did I get that right: Just enabling it in sysconfX will start it automatically? Where do I find sysconfX \Ruediger

Actually you cannot modify syscon...txt since it is on a read only filesystem loaded from a compressed ROM file.
I will provide a module next days to configure ans start the daemon.
