Wondering if someone might be able to cook up a module to auto-shutdown (with adjustable delay?) for when a drive comes up as degraded.
Might be handy to have as an option on a raid-5 box so the system auto-shuts-down after a drive has gone bad, giving time to put a replacement in with the least possible chance of another drive failing during the degraded period.
Possible?

I think that's a bit tricky, because there is also a big risk in stopping harddisks that have run for a long time. They might never start up again, resulting in a lost RAID-set.
Maybe one risk is a bit higher than the other, but I think it's something to take notice of.

Drive failures are definitely more likely on startup - that's when there is peak strain on the motor and the drive suffers the largest thermal gradient as it warms up. It wouldn't be hard to implement this, but it wouldn't enhance data safety either, unless you go a long time before you replace the drive.
