This is a bit kludgy, but it works ...
Set up notifications as you would expect to do for Gmail ... they won't work because Gmail expects TLS to be enabled. Now, log into your N5200 via SSH and run the following from the command line,
/opt/bin/sqlite /app/cfg/conf.db "update conf set v ='25 --tls' where k='notif_smtport'"
Notification mails should work now. Nb. don't try and test via the notification configuration page of the admin web app ... it'll complain that the port number is bogus. An alternative test might be (again via an SSH login),
/img/bin/logevent/event 201
you should receive a mail warning that the box's temperature is over 65C.
Cheers,
Miles

Cool, thanks, I was just wondering about this yesterday Does this keep on a reboot? The kludged value is written to the same DB as all the other configuration info so, yes, it should survive a reboot. Cheers, Miles

All I get is "the server does not support authentication" - I've tried every auth option, and when I choose "off", it says "Authentication Required. Learn more at msmtp: server message: 530 5.5.1 mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=14257 p10sm29467584gvf.7" When I choose "on", I get no confirmation and it shows me the prompt again. my settings are: smtp server: smtp.googlemail.com, port: 465 auth type: ?? smtp account ID: my gmail login password: my gmail password receiver's email address: my gmail address any help most appreciated!!!

Another work around. Works also on N3200. Does not need ssh or root acces.
Step 1) Get Opera or an other browser where you can change the source code of the page.
Step 2) Open the page for e-mail notification, look at the source code of the page (In Opera just left click -> Source)
Step 3) a) Look for this line
<input name="_smtport" id="_smtport" size="3" maxlength="5" onmouseover='domTT_activate and replace with this line
<input name="_smtport" id="_smtport" size="23" maxlength="55" onmouseover='domTT_activate
b) Look for this line
<input type="password" name="_password" id="_password" maxlength="12" style="width:150px" and replace with this line
<input type="password" name="_password" id="_password" maxlength="22" style="width:150px"
c) Look for this line
if(!isPort(_smtport)){
and replace with this line
if(isEmpty(_smtport)){
Step 4) Apply the changes and enter te following text in to the port field
587 --tls=on --tls-certcheck=off choose PLAIN as auth type. (Note this applies to Gmail)
Step 5)Test the connection. You should get a test e-mail. If not check the password it can be up to 22 characters long. Check if you have entered the address of the DNS server in the network configurtion tab.
Step 6) If you get the e-mail hit the apply button. Finished.

I know this is an old thread but since it's a new problem for me, I'm adding. I tried the kludgy solution but now I simply can't mail. Does anyone know how to set this value back to its original, ie what the original value was? As a point of note, I think that the easiest solution (aside from trying to install the latest firmware which involves other problems of course) is given by google here: www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=176600 To cut to the chase, the answer is: "If your device does not support SSL, connect to aspmx.l.google.com on port 25." Again sorry to reopen an old thread but I recently tried this solution because my Thecus is illin and I need to keep an eye on it and at this point I can't send any notifications whatsoever.

I upgraded to the latest version of WP last night, thinking that might be the culprit as I was several updates behind.Also thought my email account might be filtering, so I switched to a Gmail account...and still nothing.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I have a LAN and a WAN port, the email always tries to send from the WAN port, and not he LAN port. This was weird, but I tested and verified this. So, if you want to send email, hook up your WAN port to your swithc, give it another IP, and then it should work if all else is set correctly.
