OK, so you enable the FTP service but what encode method is the best? Does it matter?
Also for the FTP function it uses port 443 for the secure port (by default) correct? So I should have that port open on my router for the Thecus N2100 correct?
I have a DynDNS account and have it set up in my router to auto update...
I also have one user set up on the thecus as a test account for the FTP....which I know works because I have used it recently on a seperate FTP application.
So I tried to connect and I am not getting through...
Do I have to have anything else opened up as far as ports on the router for the Thecus besides 443???
Any general information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Leeland

FTP runs on port 20/21 not on 443, which is https. That might explain your problem.
If the ftp server supports passive mode you just need to open port 21 tcp. If you can log in but not view directories, retrieve files etc, you need to open port 20 as well. I would not expect this to be necessay though....
Btw, make sure everything works locally (on the lan), before trying to access through your router.
Dont know about encode method, I'd just go with the default.

OK I had a brain fart there...I should have known that one...as far as the port 21 open. SO I have that done, port 21 is open. I have folders set up, some with public view and some with ACL permissions. I have an account set up with a username and password and I gave that account access to the one folder for viewing rights. I have the DynDNS account set up, in the router to forward the IP address. How do you test internally on the lan? I know this sounds like a stupid question but I am asking anyways The thecus on my network has an internal IP of 192.168.1.3 I tried a couple different ways and nothing worked so far ftp:\\192.168.1.3 ftp:\\username:password@192.168.1.3 where the username and password were that of the account I set up. Am I missing something noobish here? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance, leeland

OK so I finally got it to work I don't know what I did to get it to work but here is what I did. downloaded the new firmware, installed it, and deleted the account and re-created it. BOOM was able to connect and get it. So I moved on to creating groups for each folder and adding my new account to each group. but when I log into the ftp it says I am part of smbusers 230-User leeland_1 has group access to: smbusers 230 OK. Current restricted directory is / Anyone have any idea what smbusers is? When I put the account in the folder ACL I am able to access everything and download...but when I just have the group in the folder ACL I am unable to access anything...

N2100 Firmware version : 2.1.01 Created a user - aaaa. Created a group - AAAA_group. Put user aaaa into the AAAA_group. Created a share folder - FTP_TEST. Use Filezilla (2.2.14b) to acess N2100.
In two separate tests, 1) User aaaa in the FTP_TEST's writeable list 2) Group AAAA_group in the FTP_TEST's writeable list
I was able to upload/download/delete files.

I am using IE at the moment, and I used Bulletproof ftp....so I am not sure if there is a difference since I can get to the folders just fine. Like I said earlier it lists me as having group access to smbusers. I don't have a group smbusers...so I am wondering if that is something internal to the N2100 or if I am missing something obvious. My goal is to have a group for each folder and then put users in the groups to define access. That is not working at the moment...only seems to work if I have the user in the folder for the ACL. I though the setup is pretty straight forward...which is why I don't know why it isn't working correctly...

I created RAID with the new firmware - v2.1.01. Don't know if that makes any difference. I think smbusers is a internal group.

I haven't gotten to that point yet...I didn't create a new folder and follow your steps...YET. It didn't occur to me that I would need to re-create the folder structure after running the firmware update...BUT I am getting desperate so I will start from scratch and create a new folder, then a new group, then a new user. and see how that goes. I will post the results later tonight when I get home

OK it works !!! Yah !!!
I followed your path N2100owner and created a new folder...new group and new user.
For what ever reason that seemed to work so I had to re-create all the folders and groups and then I was able to log in, download, & upload files.
Thanks for the advice guys much appreciated !!!
