I'm trying to setup folders on my N5200 so that I can access them through \\n5200\<sharename> without being prompted for a password.
When I originally setup the box for testing, I used three 74GB (RAID5) drives I had lying around for testing, and I got it working easily.
However, now that I've got the proper drives in (Seagate 7200.10s - 750GB x 3 in RAID5) it always asks me for a password.
I presumed that I would just set the 'Browable' and 'Public' settings on the folder to 'Yes', but this doesn't do the trick. I've also tried setting those options to 'Yes' on all of the default folders, but to no avail.
I've also got the Domain/Workgroup set to match the PCs accessing it in both the WAN and Authentication pages.
For reference, I'm on the 1.00.05 firmware, with just the IMGDUP, AUTOSTART and NOTIFYMAIL modules installed. All the services are disabled with the exception of SMB/CIFS and secure webdisk.
Many thanks in advance!

Hi razzleultra, welcome to the forum... Even if you're telling that it worked some time ago, I'd say that it is not possible to access shares on the N5200 (maybe you already had open one share issuing a user and password and then reopened sometime later that share or another share - in this case you're not asked again for username and password?). The reason, why it is not possible to open a share without username and password the setting of the SECURITY option in smbd.conf. Normally this is set to "user", "server" or "domain" and running with these modes the SAMBA server always asks for a username and password. The only chance to have shares without authorization is the setting "SECURITY = share" and "gest ok = yes", but this is not supported by the Thecus software. And I'd like to emphasize: this is good so. There is no other choice as Windoze doesn't support mixed mode shares, that means shares with username and passwords, shares without it, etc. Windoze even doesn't support mutiple connections to shares with different usernames.... Hope this explains it... Andreas EDIT: I've found a nice article explaining the share security modes. Have a look here: www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=169560&seqNum=3&rl=1

Interesting...! I'll obviously bow to your knowledge on this (as I'm really flailing around in the dark TBH!), but the strange thing is, I didn't have any users set up! Having said that, I did create a user initially to test it out, and given how I very rarely reboot PCs, I suppose it's possible that they cached the credentials. Though I did reboot the Thecus, numerous times... When you say that the 'share' mode is not supported by the Thecus software, and Windows doesn't support mixed mode shares, I'm not sure what you're driving at? It wouldn't bother me if ALL the shares on the Thecus were accesible without password, and I'm not above a little tinkering if that's what it takes (already upgraded the memory ) PS Thanks for the quick response, 32 minutes is awesomely fast!

Hi razzleultra, what I wanted to say is that "security = share" isn't supported by the Thecus software for good reasons - most of the users wouldn't like it. So I think you must live with it, or - if you're an experienced SAMBA admin - change the SAMBA configuration manually and don't use the web admin pages for the SAMBA configuration. Needless to say that Thecus will not be happy tweaking their code in this way and you'll lose any right for support. I see no other way, sorry.... Andreas

Fair enough, I was just getting frustrated because I thought I had it working previously! Stupid brain fails me again... Not a big problem thought, I'll just go down the route of mapping shared network drives now with most likely just the one user account. Thanks again, and good work on the modules! PS How about a module for showing the temperature readings of the drives from SMART / optional email notifications with user defined temperature thresholds?

The INFO module does that already (but not the email notification)

Really? Excellent, when 1.00.6 goes to release, I'll definitely give it a look!
Might be worth putting that on the Wiki, as I saw the INFO module and just thought it gave a little bit of network card information and not much more.

gideon007 was faster.... ;D
Yes, I've already included the hard disk temperature in the INFO module.
There is already a temperature alarm email notification, but I think this is only for the CPU temperature or something like this. Indeed, I see the alarm message but I don't find the place where the temperature alarm is issued.
What I've read in the Internet the smart values for the harddisk temperature are neither standard nor reliable. Some companies don't provides it, some are reporting a weird temperature format and some are reporting false values. Just for your information.
But anyway, it would be just easy to monitor the temperature and send an e-mail when reaching some limits. I think there should be a MONITOR module which does different monitor tasks. Btw. Thecus already has such a monitor running, the name is "agent2", but it is a binary, not a shell script.

Might be worth putting that on the Wiki, as I saw the INFO module and just thought it gave a little bit of network card information and not much more. Good idea razzleultra! Why don't you do just that? Registering is free, and the more users of the wiki the better. It's the classic mantra "Be a player, not a victim" Incidentally I am keen on the same features you requested and am also waiting for the release version of the 1.00.06 firmware so I can test the new modules.

Done!
Though I've kept it brief given that I haven't actually got the module installed myself! (Waiting for official firmware).

Good on you! That's the way to do it. Incremental and accurate updates from many users and before you know it you have a comprehensive knowledgebase.

Ok, this is kind of strange. I can access \\n5200\share without a password. I didn't do anything special. I created a folder called public and checked the public and browsable option. I do not have cached password, and have tried it from different machines and all the same, no password required when I have public enabled. Maybe it is just me

For those who are still reluctant to install the 1.00.06.5 firmware but who wants to know what information the INFO module is showing, I added an example output to the module description page on the Thecus Wiki.

kniteowlNo, it's not only you..... me too I just tried it myself and I can access the public folder without getting asked. I don't understand this for the moment as all writings I read so far were describing what I posted earlier. Need to think about it sometimes.... now I'm too tired... good night... Andreas

So I wasn't going crazy!
Having thought about it though it makes more sense for me to use passwords and users so that I can stop myself accidentally deleting things from shares.
I'd be interested to know how you've got those shares working though.
