Hi All, I have bought a N5200 for our network and im beginning to think ive made a big mistake, it was fine for the first month but now every day it locks up and nobody can access data on it, the web panel still works, sometimes its only certain folders and other times its all. i noticed that it said lost connection to FSNGA1 which is our ADS server, so i decided to take the authentication right off for testing and leave it as complete access to the network without ads support, it works but it was doing the same thing within 2 hours. i cant shake this problem and its getting really annoying, it must be something in our network because ive just got it replaced and this is a new unit and yet its still doing the same thing. If anybody has any ideas or knows how to sovle this i will pay pal you something i don't care i just need to get it working!!! the log file looks normal::

Hi tomvear, welcome to the forum! 1) Please tell us what hardware, disks and firmware you're using. 2) Can you login to the system (using the SSHD and SYSUSER modules)? 3) Could you describe the situation when the unit fails in more details? For me it is not clear what really happens or at least what you experience when the system locks up. Btw: do you know Linux? At least some commands and how to issue commands at the shell prompt? Andreas

Thanks for the welcome hello btw. ok yes thats a good point, details! the firmware is on 1.00.04 however the unit i made the poor reseller replace had 1.00.05 on it and the same issue was happening. The disks look like this: 1 238,475 WD2500JS-00NCB1 10.0 OK 2 238,475 WD2500JS-00NCB1 10.0 OK 3 238,475 WD2500JS-00NCB1 10.0 OK 4 238,475 WD2500JS-00NCB1 10.0 OK 5 238,475 WD2500JS-00NCB1 10.0 OK Total Capacity 1,192,375 Disk power management is turned off and at current ADS support is as i thought maybe because the SAN was losing its connection to the Domain controller that maybe its stopping users from being able to access it, since i took ads support off, nothing has changed! im not sure what SSHD and SYSUSER modules are but i just go via 192.168.0.10 and log in! im not really a linux person at all ive never had much to do with it!

tomvear,
it's still not clear to me what "stopping users from being able to access it" really means.
What protocol are they using? I assume CIFS (windows shares). Do they see the shares or are the shares not available at all or only some of them? Can they login in when asked for the credentials or is the username/password not accepted. Do you see any pattern how often or when the failures you'll describe in more details are happening? After what time is the system working again? After reboot?
You see: there is room for more details. Please be more specific.
Andreas

Yeh its on CIFS and they will have files open and be using data from the thecus but maybe once or twice a day the connection to the data from the desktop drops and if you open my computer up it usually crashes and if you do a start>run on a share on the unit \\192.168.0.10\share it just says network path cannot be found. and if you try to access \\192.168.0.10\ to see a list of shares - the same error message appears its like it doesn't exist when the unit it down and windows cant find it at all and for instance somebody will have ms word open with a file stored on the unit but when the connection is lost word just crashes. there doesn't appear to be a pattern although a few people said it get slow and the slower and then the connections drop. to resolve i have to reboot once or twice, this has happened to two units now!
Thanks, Tom

Might be caused by a network IP address conflict?
Have you reserved the 192.168.0.10 address for the N5200 in your DHCP server? (Assuming you've configured your N5200 to get it's address via DHCP)
If you have manually set your N5200's IP address to be static and the DHCP doesn't know about it, it might be assigning 192.168.0.10 to your PC when you boot it up and causing network mayhem.
If that's not it, then you might want to remove your N5200 from the network and connecting it to a seperate hub/switch with only 1 PC connected to it. If it works fine like that, it's not the N5200 (that's the outcome I expect you'll see). In that case you'll have to be a standard network admin and diagnose what's going wrong on your network mate.
Hope this helps
Cheers.

We have ours on a static IP and that ip is outside of the DHCP scope so no conflicts should occur!

thats it, maybe thecus isn't for us, both units are going back to the reseller. verdict - Thecus need to realize that the box itself is only half the product and without the support and good documentation it will always remain half a product. there is no excuse for taking somebodies money for a unit such as this without some limited support.

i had the same problem. to me the issue was samba. now i turned it off. i exports everything in NFS to my PDC and re-exported with SMB for Windows access (7 clients). Now it doesn't crash anymore and also in this way i resolved the issue of mapping LDAP users between NFS/Unix and SMB permissions. The only drawback is that i had to desable load balancing which causes problems with the re-exported shares.
i will not buy thecus products anymore.

Do you mean that when SAMBA on your N5200 is configured to connect to your ADS it will have problems like tomvear posted? Still the error report is not totally clear to me but anyway, it's not my day today.... Andreas

yeah.. well i don't remember if it does hang even with its own auth. But i don't care cause i need users and groups from my LDAP server.
