I'm using Exchange 2003 locally, with local subnet allowed to relay without authentication. Email notifications work but no From: or To: fields...
Firmware 4.9 and 5 both work like this.
emails look like this: --------------------------- Microsoft Mail Internet Headers Version 2.0 Received: from localhost ([192.168.1.20]) by hidden.local with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Sat, 30 Dec 2006 03:15:15 -0700 From: To: Subject: Em207E event (warning level) occurred Return-Path: stor@192.168.1.20 Message-ID: <HIDDENtIrOA2UXtbS3B00000025@hidden.local> X-OriginalArrivalTime: 30 Dec 2006 10:15:15.0816 (UTC) FILETIME=[6666FE80:01C72BFB] Date: 30 Dec 2006 03:15:15 -0700

Hi jordan,
it is totally clear why the mail body From: and To: field is empty: it is a bug in the email notification script.
To fix it, it takes 1 Min. and I already patched the script. But I cannot install the script as it is located in read-only memory.
I've already send an e-mail about this issue to Thecus three weeks ago, but still no answer.

nlrelaI fear you need to be more specific: what is not working with the e-mail notification? I haven't checked it yet but I assume they fixed the RFC address format. If you are still having more problems it might be a problem with your mail server settings too..... Andreas

Works fine for me now that I've upgraded to 1.00.7 (without any extra modules).

Yeah, it works fine for me too although I did note that I had to put in my mail servers IP address rather than name. Obviously my box has some sort of issue doing DNS lookups.

If you are still having more problems it might be a problem with your mail server settings too..... This might certainly be the issue, although I don't see that many fields which I could fill in wrong. Have set it up as follows: Email Notification – enabled SMTP Server – server name of my domain / mail provider Port – 25 Auth Type – I tried all options SMTP Account ID – ID of email address with which I normally do send emails

Did u try enetering the IP address of your ISP's mail server rather than entering the server name?

Yes I did enter the ip as well (tried ip from isp and from domain provider as well, of course with adjusted account ID), but unfortunately no mail received from the N5200.

The reason might be, that Your mailserver doesn't accept the "From" values in the mails from the N5200 - they are:
notification mails : admin@<nas name>.<domain> module mails : thecus@<nas name>
My mailserver checks the return path and both are no valid return pathes (at least in my setup) - so I had to do some changes in my mailserver. I would prefer if both mails (notification and from modules) would be constructed like : <any name>@<domain>
br Peter
PS : this is for FW 1.00.06.5 and 1.00.07

nlrela, @peter, this is exactly what I wanted to point out: so now that Thecus fixed the mail addresses syntactically we are dealing with a different type of problem where it is not clear if it is really Thecus' fault. Many mail servers are configured in a special way when dealing with security and what is accepted and not accepted. I.e. I've configured my mail server in a way that it accepts the mails from my N5200 device. But again, its a configuration issue on my mail server. So if the current FROM address the N5200 uses isn't right for most of us we need to find out what the FROM address should be so that most of us are happy with it. So Peter proposed <any_name>@<domain> where <domain> is set at the configuration page. Would this be the perfect setting? Any comments? Andreas

Andreas no, the from address needs to be <any_name@domain> according to the 1.00.7 release notes, this is fixed. I have not been able to test it, since i don't have physical access to the box, and I do not want to upgrade the firmware through a VPN connection over the internet. The 1.00.6.5 had been working for me, even that the <> where not put around the address: From: admin@N5200.mira.teltec-de.dyndns.org -Manfred

Maybe I might be missing the point, but why could the "FROM" adress not be completely configurable (as e.g. SMTP account ID) ?
As I do understand it an email adress has three different parts which the N5200 should take notice off....
E.g.: someone@somewhere.com where someone can be configured by most users themselves (depending on ISP) where somewhere can only be defined by users with their own domain where .com might has have several values, but can not be controlled by the user (not in every country you can choice which extension you wanna have)
What I also do not understand xcompletely is why the mails are not being sent with the SMTP Account ID.
Guess I have to learn still quite a lot.

Andreas no, the from address needs to be <any_name@domain> Manfred, sorry for the misunderstanding.... I've used the angle brackets just to denote that any_name and domain are variables - I should use another meta-character the next time. As I'm the one who initially raised the non RFC compliant FROM address issue, I'm supposed to know about the right usage of the angle brackets.... Andreas
