I have an N5200 with 5x750GB Seagate running RAID5. I've added a few custom applications running Tomcat etc. I am currently running firmware 2.00.04. Now I need more space.
(1) I know it is not on Thecus offical list for N5200, but do you think the Hitachi 2TB drives would work ok?
(2) Do you think I need to upgrade firmware first? Everything is working now, so I see no need to upgrade unless I have to. If I do upgrade, can I skip from 2.00.04 to latest version, or do I have to install intermediate versions first? Also I don't mind resetting ACL's (not too many to begin with), but do I also have to reinstall all the modules?
(3) What RAM is recommended for N5200? Since I have the custom apps and thinking of adding Azureus too, I'm thinking of adding more RAM.
(4) Is there any market for used 750GB seagate drives, or should I just keep them for backups, etc.?
I appreciate all the help. I don't want to buy 5 x 2TB drives and not have them work, and I can't afford to buy a new N5200Pro right now either.

i just booted the box with 2.0.0.15 (with hdds, thats where the screenshot is from) but i immediatly upgraded to 2.0.0.16 and i am now building the raid...it takes a while as you can guess :-) btw i also upgraded the cpu to pentium m 2,0 ghz the second the box arrived. i didnt even turn the power on 1 time with the celeron...i dont like celerons :-)

i just saw the box was swapping so i changed the ram...i guess the webinterface is faster now. but upgrading the cpu does far more...a pentium m 2,0 ghz (sl7sm) is available on ebay for around 30-40 euro/dollar. very good investment...

Has anybody tested the "old" N5200 (non PRO) with 2TB HDDs? Thanks

It's cool that people are getting the N5200 (non-Pro) to work with 2TB drives, but I'm not sure that I want to trust my data to a forum of "seems to work for me" unless we can confidentially say why we can ignore Thecus specifically calling out not recommending that we do this.
Does anyone know why Thecus made their recommendation? If it's just a performance thing for the RAID software with larger drives, that's great. I'll upgrade it and call it a day. In fact, I think I may have an m-series cpu laying around.
But if there is a reliability problem or experimental support in the SW for this, that's important to know.

I got my N5200 (non-pro) running with 5 x 1.5 TB Samsung HD154UI drives which are below a hundred bucks on newegg.com
Based on things I learned on this forum I: * used 2.00.16 * chose the Samsung drives which seemed stable and didn't have this problem some of the WDs do * built the array from scratch (didn't try to upgrade) * built the array with 5 drives, since people seemed to have trouble moving from 4 to 5 drives
I used the USB/esata bi-directional copy module to backup my folders to an eSata 2tb drive and then used rsync from the command line (after installing the rsync module) to copy them back since the USB/esata bi-directional module won't let you copy to the correct folder going the other direction.
So far so good. I'm guessing I'll never upgrade the software on the N5200 again since Thecus seems to not be working on the 2.x versions of the firmware further, and 3.x won't run on the N5200. Will report back if I have any issues.

Hi,
I'm looking at upgrading storage on my 5200Pro.
Currently I have 5xSamsung HD103 1Gig drives working with 2.00.11.2. Has anyone tried the 2gig Samsung HD203WI drives with this firmware (I don't want to upgrade firmware if I can help it as it invariably breaks something else and 2.00.11.2 does everything I need).
I'm also looking at doing a RAM/CPU upgrade at the same time, should speed up the migrate (hopefully!).
SL7SM 2gig Pentium M and a gig of ram.
Anything to watch out for on either of those, bar changing the FSB link?

Thecus N5200Pro 2TB Samsung HD203WI Seem to be working. Firmware 2.00.11.2 Installed 2, RAID 0 striped them, ran the Intel NAS test against them to give them a bit of a work out. All good. Upgraded firmware to 2.00.16 (in an attempt to see if I could get my 2Ghz P4M to run with the 133Mhz FSB instead of 100Mhz). Attempt failed. Went back to 100Mhz. Installed 3rd drive, tried to get N5200Pro to migrate the 2 striped RAID 0 drives to a 3 drive RAID 5. Migration failed. There's a shock ;D Seems to be no way to do anything when you have the "Migration failed" message displayed, had to physically turn the box off. After reboot original 2 drive RAID 0 seemed to still be intact. Deleted the RAID and created a RAID 5 array across all 3. Build now in progress. After an hour of just showing "Formatting RAID" it's finally decided to show me a progress... RAID Status : Build:1.0% ( 1099.0min ) I don't even want a 3 drive RAID 5 array! I was just messing about! So this will be cancelled (probably with extreme power switch prejudice) so I can put the other 2 Samsung drives in an build my 5x2TB uber RAID 5... (Insert evil laugh here). It's going to be a long night! lol! - And yes, you can tell by the way I'm messing about that all my data is safe and securely backed up - Not looking forward to copying it all back, that's gonna take ages!

Thecus N5200Pro 2TB Samsung HD203WI Seem to be working. Firmware 2.00.11.2 ... I have a 5200PRO with no drives in it - I took out the 500GB WDs that were in it and have used them in my Buffalo Terastations in anticipation of buying a set of 2GB drives for the Thecus. I'd be very interested to know how well the Samsung HD203WI's are working for you - They're on sale here (AUS) for AUD$187 at the moment.
