Burrokeet, how do you verify that the drives are indeed spinned down after that 30 minutes? Does it show anywhere in the admin page or via indication lights or the LED? What is your read/write speed to your RAID6 array from an XP Pro or Vista client?
I tried to build a RAID5 array in my N5200Pro with 4 x750GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS disks. Found out after the building process was finished that although the array was healthy, 1 of the disks was bad (warnings). However, the RAID page did not indicate a "degraded" array, just that only 3 disks were alive. After I rebooted, then the RAID page showed that the array was degraded (no idea why it only showd this after reboot!).
Next day I got a replacement drive (plus a fifth drive). Deleted the old RAID5 array since I had no files on there yet. Build a fresh 4 + 1 spare RAID5 array with the 5 WD7500AAKS disks (took about 10 hours last night). This morning found that everything was ok :-) Setup my shared folder and copied around 400GB of mp4 files from one of my external drives to it. Write speed (from a Vista client) averaged around 19MB/s. Works greate so far, about 30% faster than my ReadyNAS NV+, (though I was expecting even higher performance). However, the NV+ is definitly much quieter than the n5200 pro and setting up of readonly in NFS mode is a plus (so I can do control rw using ACL over CIFS and force read only stream video using NFS).
<2008-01-17> Currently running it in 5xRAID5 configuration. Write speed from my VISTA client gets > 30MB/S over gigabit network when I was transferring my video files.

the only reason that I think they spin down is that when accessing it after a long period, there seems to be a little spin-up delay
we only have OS X clients, so I can't tell you what the read/write speed is for Windows- in any event, it is pretty slow with AFP right now because we have not upgraded to a gigibit switch yet and are using some lowend linksys home stuff

I'm using 3x Maxtor 500GB STM3500630AS with no problems. I believe these are basically the same as the ST3500630AS Segates (7200.10) Do you have unable to spin up problem as mentioned in Hexus review? I didn't have any problems whatsoever. FYI I'm running v1.00.10

I'm using 5 Seagate Barracuda ES.2 - 1TB HDD - 32MB , SATA .
I`m running 3 disks in raid 5 and 2 disk in raid 1.
I haven't had any trouble with these drives in a RAID 5 and RAID 1. The N5200 firmware is v2.00.01
Up and running for almost a week.
No problems what so ever with the N5200

I will have to add a 4th Seagate 1TB disk to it as I'm running out of space. So far so good and I'm hoping it stays that way.

Hi all, is there any feedback if the SAMSUNG SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200rpm *SATA2* (32MB) works fine? I wanna buy a new 1Tb unit and that one looks great. Other choices are: Hitachi and Seagate (which are supposed to run fine as stated in this thread). Thanks for your advise

Hi there
I just bought the N5200B Pro, and have set up RAID 5 using 3x Western Digital 1TB WD SATA2 WD10EACS (Green Drives). Running fine for about 3 weeks now.
Drives do not spin down even though power down is enabled, but this seems a common problem.
Firmware is 2.0.0 (as from the factory)

I just received two 1TB F1's today. Plugged one into my N5200BR (non-PRO) with FW 2.00.01 and CPU_FLAG to 1 (so it reads as a PRO, iSCSI etc.). Blue power led turns on, so far no disk access yet. Drive is not yet to be seen in the DISK menu as well. I am currently looking for next steps to get the NAS to see the drive. Might be a jumper on drive to be set... If anyone has any suggestions... I'll keep you guys updated on any progress or lack of it.

I have just started the process of replacing my current Samsung 500GB drives with Western Digital (WD) WD10EACS WD Caviar GP Green Power 1TB hard drives. The first one seems to have been recognised by the NAS and the rebuild is in process (approx 8hrs to rebuild). Will let you know if all 5 HDD's work once my long slow upgrade process is over.
