As I am not getting any help from Thecus I am going to post my emergency here in the hope that someone may have the ability to help.
I have a Thecus N5200 (non-pro) that has been running a RAID5 array for about 4 years. This is populated with 5 1TB drives from Hitachi. Last week my shared folder became suddenly inaccessible, so I checked the unit. The front display showed RAID as being "Degraded" and logging into box showed that disk 4 had failed. The unit was showing a screen asking for me to insert a replacement drive so it could begin a rebuild. I had to order a drive so very *friendly* person down the unit until that arrived.
When the drive arrived I replaced the number 4 slot and restarted the Thecus while refering to the guidance found at (http://www.thecus.com/download/other/N5200_FAQ_2006-11-22.pdf) under section 2.2 "Rebuild a degraded RAID". Specifically I followed the section about "If the replacement is done
after NAS rebooting or shutdown".
I logged into the admin GUI (which was now running incredibly slowly) and after a log wait managed to get into the RAID screen and add the new drive as spare. At this point the unit started to tell me that it was "BUILDING" - This was not what I was expecting, I expected to see "REBUILDING". I decided to leave it to complete and that seems to have happened overnight.
But the interface is still VERY slow and I am unable to access the "Folders" section (even after a 1/2 hour wait). The shared folder is no longer accessible and I am getting a REALLY bad feeling about the data contained therein.
The problem now is the complete lack of help from Thecus support. The loger I wait the more likely I will keep tinkering and do something unrecoverable (if we haven't passed that point already).
I need to know what to do and as far as I can see, I have several options.
[1]. Wait for Thecus.
[2]. Try to reinstall the failed drive (the Thecus unit told me it had failed, but the drive seems to be functional) and see if it is able to rebuild.
[3]. I also have a Thecus N5200 PRO (geez the money I have spent with these people). I could try removing the entire drive set from the N5200 and place it in the N5200PRO (to see if it is readable in the other unit.
[4]. Build a rig and try to restore the data using the methodology explained in ARCTRA's document found at thecususergroup.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=n5200installations&action=display&thread=4156
UPDATE: while creating this entry My Thecus N5200 has finally made it to the FOLDERS section and reported that there are no folder present. I guess I am now in a recovery mode, but any assistance or suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
