judging by the lack of new threads on these boards and the official Thecus forums at;
www.thecusforum.eu/
thecus has cut-off the love for n5200 (non-Pro and Pro versions, i have both).
the termination of support for the non-pro n5200 isn't too much of a surprise or an issue as the hardware (Celeron M 600MHz cpu /256MB RAM) really limited upgrading beyond 1TB drives.
what is annoying is that the n5200 Pro has very capable hardware which is even upgradable (Celeron M 1.6Ghz up to 2.1GHz - 2.2GHz Pentium M & 512MB RAM to 1GB RAM) thus should have no problem running larger RAID arrays. from what i've read there is a limitation on max array size enforced by EXT3/4 file system. there seems to be a bit of contention here. the source here;
www.h-online.com/open/features/The-Ext4-Linux-file-system-746579.html
says the max file system size for EXT3 is 16TB and EXT4 is 1024PB.
however the poster 'synthaxx' from the thread '5200\pro alternative OS's'
thecususergroup.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=n5200modifications&thread=3992
suggests that partitions beyond 4TB aren't possible. regardless the n5200 pro can side step this problem by creating multiple RAID volumes.
anyway the whole problem of support for our n5200's (non-Pro & Pro) doesn't bode well for thecus. i'm sure all n5200 owners (or any other 'Nxxxx' users with older thecus hardware) burnt by spending their hard earned cash on thecus units will NOT be returning customers. of course this will be amplified when those owners recommend NOT to purchase anything from thecus.
i digress. i'm looking for anyone with n5200 Pro units that have successfully upgraded to 2TB drives. with the advanced format / 4K block HD's causing problems with n5200's as seen here;
forum.thecusforum.eu/showthread.php?t=3450
where users report massive throughput slow-downs due to misalignment without applying the workaround mentioned in this thread.
i'm avoiding WD & Seagate (eco /green drives) b/c of the aforementioned 4K issue. that really only leaves samsung & hitachi drives.
so does anyone have the samsung 2TB F4 drives or hitachi 2TB 7K3000, 7K2000 or 5K3000 hard drives that work without modifications to the thecus unit it's self?
any thoughts on these samsung and hitachi drives would be appreciated though i'm not hopeful b/c of the thinning herd of users attracted to this forum, worth a shot at least.
cheers.
