For users of newer models (i.e. without the serial connector) it would be nice to be able to store a firmware binary on a USB key (with a specific name), attach key to a USB port then upon boot the device automagically detects the existence of the new firmware on the USB key and loads it up.

Yes - I have mentioned this before ... that would be the nicest when to try out things like Debian too - if something could be done to the redboot to boot off USB if some "tag" file found on it else boot normally it would be great and a lot safer than reflashing the main firmware
