anyone had problems with upgrading to a pentium m 2 Ghz ?
If tried 2 different cpu's and all seems well for a while. Well until the 5200 gets stressed I guess. Bad things then start to happen. I've had a raid rebuild triggered, smb shares disappear, lot's of rogus os processes that can't be killed, the nas becoming unresponsive. Stuck a booting... when trying to do a hard re-boot.... Data corruption...I could go on. Not a good experience at all, for a while I thought I'd killed it but after replacing the original cpu it all seems back to normal.
I don't think it was a bad cpu (or 2 even), I'm guessing but does the jumper change also effect the memory bus? I'm thinking maybe my ram can't cope with the bus increase.
Any ideas?

Did you change the bus speed from 100mhz to 133mhz?

I sure did, and I'm guessing that is where my problems began.

Well until the 5200 gets stressed I guess. Bad things then start to happen. I have a 2GHz CPU with 133MHz FSB combination. Stressed the NAS plenty by rebuilding array, moving back >1TB worth of data and calculating/verifying MD5 sigs on the NAS for all of those files and not an issue. I'm running PC3200 DDR (Corsair VS1GB400C3)

yeah you have 400mhz ram while I have 1GB of 333mhz..so the overclock of the frontside bus could be better coped with by your ram. I tried 2 different stick of corsair VS 400 ages ago and my 5200 didn't want to play with either of them. Since that I discovered that corsair have used the same part number for sticks made out of different modules, so just buying by the part number doesn't always mean you'll get lucky. And I am very unlucky by nature

has any brave soul who has fitted a rgb header noticed any bus speed, divisors or memory voltage settings?

I sure did, and I'm guessing that is where my problems began. So the 'safe' way to go is upgrading to a pentium-m with 400 Mhz FSB, such as the SL7EM?

I decided to replace the CPU with a SL7EM 2.0Ghz to improve iscsi performance.
The upgrade was very easy and took less than 10 minutes. I was somewhat surprised to see the cooler was attached to the mobo by only 2 nylon plugs. Not what you expect in a box built for safety by redundancy.
iscsi write performance now 40-45 Mbps, previously 30-35.
The web interface is snappier too. Much better performance upgrade than RAM.

So, is it possible to upgrade a N5200 to a Pro or higher? Are the CPUs on daughterboards? I've looked in my n5200(not pro) but Didn't see any socket CPUs, did you solder them? I have been able to upgrade my memory to 1gig but nothing beyond that. The N5200 has a soldered CPU, the N5200pro not - so upgrade is possible for N5200pro, but not recommended for an N5200 (non pro) br Peter

Yes, after the problems I had with the 533MHz bus speed and 2 different SM's I have upgraded to a 400MHz 'EM and so far all seems good. Incidently, I have 2 spare 'SM's if anyone wants to try these.

Howdy guys,
Great forum!
I have an N5200BR Pro, and came across this forum. CPU upgrade seems a very tempting idea. I'm thinking of a 2.26GHz model (SL7VB), and wondered if anyone had successfully upgraded their N5200Pro with this CPU? I know that previous pages (page 2 of this thread) indicated that this particular CPU will work, but would like confirmation that this is indeed working before I make the purchase.
If anyone had upgraded successfully, what performance throughput improvement have you seen compared to the stock Celeron 1.5GHz?
Best Regards,
Miller

anyone think an SL65Q dual-core pentium M would work in the pro?
400MHz bus, seems to be the same 478 pins.... <$10 on ebay....

anyone think an SL65Q dual-core pentium M would work in the pro? 400MHz bus, seems to be the same 478 pins.... <$10 on ebay.... 1 - It needs hardware level - Socket needs to physically fit (this is probably the only bit that will be okay!), voltage needs to be right, signalling needs to be right (most likely won't be). 2 - The BIOS has to recognise it correctly (unlikely). 3 - And the OS has to be built to support SMP (unlikely). I've never known a motherboard designed for a single core to get past the first two without a BIOS update at minimum. Normally they just won't even POST. All in all it will either not work, or will make no difference if it did (only one core used). Most likely not work at all. Best to keep the CPU change to another in the family. Stick to 400Mhz clock if you don't plan on updating the memory. 533Mhz FSB will need a RAM stick that can handle the faster clock, the original stick won't handle the faster speed. I'm just waiting for a £12 ebay win Centrino 2.0GHz SL7SM and 1Gig stick to arrive in the post... Hopefully today :-) Then I will wonder if I should risk buying the 2TB Samsung F3EG drives... Hmmmm

yeh, i was checking to see if anyone had been brave enough to try.... i don't have an original stick of ram, i bought a pro mobo as a standalone upgrade for my non-pro 5200.... it didn't ship with memory so i had to scrounge the junk drawer...
in a perfect world i'd like to run a version of solaris and set up a raidz1... i just set up a home built box with open solaris and a handful of 1TB drives with RaidZ1, copied all my data off the N5200 pro so now i can play....
i've checked out a few SL7EMs but, they're a bit more than i want to pay (need 3, looking to buy 4.... not willing to pay $50 each for an outdated processor that has such limited use...) maybe i should look into an SM.....
