I am 90% sure this is the NAS solution I am going to buy but I had a few questions before hand. I will be using this to store my personal multimedia content.
What kind of warranty is offered by Thecus?
I know 32bit Windows has a volume size limit of 2 TB. Is this still the case with NAS? I want to do 5x1TB in RAID 5, ideally. What happens to the extra space on the drive if Windows cuts off at 2 TB? What will happen if I move to a 64bit machine with the same set up?
And finally what about encryption? Is there a way to do full disk encryption with the entire array?
Thanks for the help!!!

A network share is different to a local volume in Windows, so the 2TB limit does not apply. I have a N5200 filled with 1TB drives and it is great. You can also now stack multiple NAS boxes using the most recent firmware (2.0.0.4) so you could end up with omething like 15TB viewable as one massive network drive

hi funkstar,
please allow me one question. i am new to the subject and trying to find out which server/ enterprize HD would be ok to deploy with n5200b. i target RAID6 with five 1tb hd's.
up to now, it appears only for the seagate barracuda es.2 (ST31000340NS) to be the right choice, approved by thecus themselves for compatibility. i am looking for some other options too (samsung spinpoint f1 raid- HE103UJ or hitachi ultrastar A7K1000- HUA721010KLA330). could you spend some words on that, perhapse some suggestion or recommendation?
thanks for your time vladimir

I use Hitachi's with no issues. Stay away from Spinpoints since they have a wicked degredation issue that is currently "fixed" in a beta fw. Just search spinpoint on this forum and that should be enough warning for ya WD's have little complaints, if you want to go Seagate route make sure to do your research. Certain Seagate drives have a startup command issue so make sure you know which versions those are! I think the latest FW release notes had a blurb on it etc.

any word if the spinpoint issue has since been resolved? The degradation issue never caused me to loose anything, it basically meant that if you turned the 5200 off (something I avoided), it wouldn't see all the drives when you started it back up... So then you'd have to pull the drives it didn't start, and put them back in... The moment it spotted enough drives for a raid, the raid would reappear, and then the next drive would make it go "woohoo" and then it would waste the next 20 hours rebuilding the last drive into the raid. It is resolved, but still only in beta, I have 2.00.11.2 works fine. However, if you are at all nervous, go for something else.
