Any info of where the serial port headers are on the board would be useful.

It is located at J1. Same pin assignment as a DB-9. Since it is 8 pin header, pin 9 is not used.
You can buy a 10pin flat-cable type DB-9 cable, with 1-2 aligned, 9-10 not connected, in addition to a null modem cable, you can see the message coming out at 115200 baud rate.

sorry for asking but what do you meen "with 1-2 aligned, 9-10 not connected" i made a cabel that goes from pin 1 on the N1200 PCB to (pin) 1 on the serial port and so on. and i cant get it to work. im using tutty 115200 Baud, Data bit 8, Parity None, Stop bits 1, Flow control None is that not the way to do it

The 10pin flat cable is for some old motherboards that don't have DB-9 male connector on board. Besides, N1200 board comes with 8 pin header only, that's why I said 9-10 not connected.
If you custom-made a cable, only 3 wires are required. Pin 2, 3 and 5. Since the null cable is for Rx/Tx crossing, so if you still find the console does not display, just swap pin 2 and pin 3 and try again.
