Most of the noise of my N1200 comes from the fan, because I am using 2.5" HDD. Last week, silence with occasional long beep alert replaced. Finally, I realized the fan dead. Which is good. I always want to improve the heat dissipation aggressively. See thecususergroup.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=n1200modifications&action=display&thread=1190353289I cannot find a good replacement. Then I used a 2 wire 40mm instead of the original 3 wire 25mm. Due to the wrong mounting hold pos, I glued the fan at the ventilation hole at the top instead of bottom. Now I know what "wasted" meant thecususergroup.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=n1200installations&action=display&thread=1186934842Then I realized that putting the replacement at the top is better than at the bottom. And I realized that 3 wire is absolutely necessary because N1200 will beep every half an hr for the missing rotation speed. Finally, I realized that 40mm is better than 25mm because it is less noisy in general. I got a second 40mm fan with 3 wire, "mount" (glue actually) at the top ventilation hole. The result is: Less noise, hotter exhausted air (higher ventilation efficiency). Before the modification, the fan speed is around 5XXX rpm, now is 2700 rpm in average.

I find the N1200 very noisy. Actually more noisy than my Freecom FSG-3 which is actually somewhat renowned for its noise.
So how is the noise level after you installed the 4cm fan? 1/2? 1/4?, barely noticable?

I would classify the original fan into two noise level: 1. Powerup. About 20 second long duration. 2. Normal. I guess N1200 has speed control during normal opertaion. During powerup, the fan may run in full speed.
Before the original fan died, occasionally, the noise would reach case 1, very noticeable. Actually, very noisy.
Case 2 is acceptable, but noticeable. If 40mm is case 3, it is close to unnoticeable. BTW, I am using 2.5" HD internally, it is less noisy than 3.5"HD.
