Apologies if this is the wrong board, but there's no general or questions section.
Am seriously considering the NS1200, and intend to leave it on 24/7 - as such, am concerned about the noise of the 40mm fan...I know it has 2 speeds, but how loud is the unit?
Would it be audible from 1~2 meters away in a quiet room?
Any info appreciated thanks.

yes, but then again in a quit room everything is off course. personally I have the n1200 in a locker cabinet and don't find the sound annoying or bothering, its hardly more noticeable then the pilot light from my heater..... (being a student everything is in the same room) but if your planning on putting it in the open you will hear noise, from the hd particular when your abusing the download functions for example, the fan makes sound sure, but it loses a lot of heat via the casing to.... but the noise level is a personal experience though...

Thanks for your comments vos. As with most active cooling, I expected it to be somewhat audible (this at least is not subjective), just how much is the question. There are good 80mm+ fans that are quiet enough to be almost inaudible at lower speeds/voltages though, and even a 40mm fan in a 5.25" enclosure I have is actually (suprisingly) whisper quiet in operation, and I was hoping the NS1200's fan might be similar. However from what you have said it doesn't sound like this is the case .

very true,
the level of sound is linked to the (ab)use you put your n1200. when not used the machine is less audible off course. but you will hear it sinse it doesn't have a sleep function up to date....

What do you mean about the sleep function not up to date? Does this mean the Thecus N1200 does not go in to sleep mode after a while?

exactly. it just keeps the harddisk spinning. if you don't use it the fan wil slow down a bit offcourse, and it will be more quiet than when you are abusing it but it won't go completly silent on you as it would in sleep mode.....

My N1200 always keeps spinning the harddrive and the fan. I would not place this device in a bedroom.

I'm a student so I only have one room like I said before, I have it in a locker (ventilated offcourse) and it really doesn't keep me from sleep, it is quit enough not to agitate that way.. but I wouldn't recommend use out in the open in any room no...

Mine has 3 sources of noise, and I've got rid of one of them ! 1. The fan 2. The disk when 'working' 3. The disk spinning The spinning disk makes a background droan, mainly because it is in physical contact with the desk. So, I've cut out a piece of dense packing foam and put the stand on that. It has made a small improvement. BTW - has anyone noticed but the fax draws air in from the top and expels at the bottom. Would it not be better round the other way - assuming the desk is not too dusty
