How to troubleshoot mail notification

V1.00.07, ssh/sysuser module installed...

I can't seem to get the mail notification to work.

Are there some logs or something that I can look at to find out what went wrong?

Maybe a way to test from the shell?

I've poked around a bit on the system... But am not all that familure with Linux and where logs end up...

Hi jk,

When you installed the modules, did you see any e-mails then?

Your problem is most likely caused by a mail server refusing to accept the FROM (sender) address.

The most flexible way to test different settings is indeed calling the whole stuff from the shell.
This is the command:

echo "Test message!" | /opt/bin/msmtp --host=1.2.3.4 --user=jk --password='password' --from='<[e-mail]>' [e-mail]

Of course you need to adjust the values for the command line options. Especially the "--from" option is the one causing the problem.

I am getting an error of "Missing behavior or php error ::tab alert" when I hit the send button.

Sure, I assumed that already....

But I hoped to get some more information from you.....

Is this error reproducible? Coming always?

Did you fill some special values into the e-mail notification fields (special characters, etc.)?

I ask these questions because you're the first (afaik) who reports this error and even for me activating the e-mail test button don't give me that error.....

Good call, using --debug I can now see the reason for rejection (Thecus should log errors if they occur when sending).

The hosting provider is responding with '220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited and/or bulk e-mail.'

Any thoughts on why they might be rejecting?

I have setup an e-mail account, I'm using the mail account name/password, I have tried setting the domain and mail domain to the mail account domain. I have experimented with and without <> around the from field. No luck.

BTW - Thanks for all the effort here it has been a life saver.

It comes up every time I click the test button.

I did do some modifying on my /img/www/htdocs/adm/getform.html file.

Does this effect the mail notification in any way?

Hi Jeff,

getform.html is a different thing and not related to e-mail notification....

I checked the internet: most likely you are using the IP address of an invalid SMTP mail server. Are you 100% sure that the server you are accessing is the right one?

Try: telnet yourdomain.com 25
If you get the same result you're using the wrong server.

But maybe it is something different, let's see later....

Turns out I did more to it than I thought,

I noticed my folders were missing, then I tried a factory reset and it wouldn't even reboot (kept stopped at 59secs). Finally after a power cycle, I can log in only through the wizard and with a black password but it wont take new password, it took a new IP address but doesn't take DNS changes or let me log into it through the network.

This is bizzare!

Telnet on port 25 returns the same thing. However I am positive it is the correct domain name, and ping is resolving it to the correct IP address. Email via outlook POP/SMTP works fine through the address to the account I setup.

I've sent hostgator's tech support an email, maybe they are doing something clever to prevent relaying e-mails.

But in the meantime try too google for "220-We do not authorize" and you'll find a lot of pointers on what might be wrong....

I tested the command on mail that you posted:

and I received a message on my local host. However when I use

echo "testmessage" | /opt/bin/msmtp --host="myIPaddress" -from='<nyname@invalidlocalhostname>'@localhostname myname@localhostname

then I did not receive a message. I suspect that is the reason why I am not getting email notifications.

The question is: where can I modify the "from address" in the Thecus system? There does not seem to be a configuraiton file anywhere.

Hostgator's response was that the NAS needed to be configured for athentication.

So I cycled through the various auth types and found auth=login was finally accepted. (I had tried the others 'on', 'plain', 'cram-md5' before, but not 'login')

However, now I get: '550 Adminstrative prohibition' which, best I can tell with Google wisdom, mean the IP is likely on a blacklist. Which seems unlikely since I can send and receive emails fine to my PC which shares the same router/nat.

I have dropped another query to hostgator to see what they say...
