Is there anything I can do to help troubleshoot this further?
Looking at others with similar issues in the Slimdevices Linux forum there appear to be more than one potential cause. I am a Linux newbie but can try to help and at a minimum can do functional testing of the module.
Currently the MySQL appears to be the only issue. The music library playing using different options such as random play work fine. Streaming of music is fine. THe audion codec I have tried are all funtioning. (FLAC, MP3) The web interface works well. Connection to the various internet radio and music services works. Streaming works. Interfacing with Squeezebox and Transporter devices works well. Plugins tried so far install and work well. The system overall is very responsive and seems stable.
On the initial install it does one scan and the database seems to work for viewing by the various sorts Slimserver provides. However rescans do not work so the adding music or using some of the options for organizing music do not seem to work. This seems to be the reason why art is not displayed as well. One bug to fix hopefully and all will be well
Almost there! Actually, I am using it every day with three devices. The system so far is more stable than my XP media system which was setup mainy for use as a high def video player.

I have the same issues as reported by pellicle, eg. scanning does not work properly, DB module not loaded. This is quite anoying as I cannot get it to scan my playlists. Otherwise this would be a great way to run Slimserver. Thanks omega, much appreciated!
Anyone made some progress resolving this last problem?

I have installed slimserver as well. The install went without any problems. I do not have a slim devices unit, but a friend comes over to test it. So for myself i installed the emulator. That worked fine playing items.
I also seem to have problems with a re-scan. It finds 3 directorys and there are 16 in the share. I recall that i went through these 3 with the emulator, so perhaps it adds only where you browse thorugh ? Further i see not in the HTTP interface of slimserver what it is doing. I asked a rescan and i see no progress. So either it is ready quite fast (only 16 directorys) or its still buzzy.
The emulator will not re-connect again, it keeps telling me connecting to slimserver..

While I have not been able to move forward on the root cause of the scan issue I have found the scan can be forced in some cases. I am not having any issues with playlists but the rescans do not seem to work.
I was able to get the systems to create new index for Music Folder by going to the Music Folder option in the web interface and adding all songs to a playlist.
I tested this by changing my Music folder structure by moving all songs to two subfolders. When I used the Music Folder option to look at each directory and add all songs to a playlist that directory was scanned and after that would show up in the other options such as Album or Artist view. So you have to go to each directory. Album art at the Album using gallery view did not appear but when looking at each album or playing a song it did appear in the web interface.
Adding a new song and adding it to a playlist from the Music Folder view worked as well.
However, such changes as moving files or deleting files are not delt with and doing the above does not remove the obsolete data. I did a uninstall reinstall and then the same as above and the old data was removed and the new data accurately reflected the number and placement of songs.
All in all I can use SS with the workaround for scan but it needs to be resolved.
If Thecus is watching and could add a hand working with the SD people this would be great. There is a fair amount of interest in this and while it works a couple of bugs to work out would make it perfect. Andreas has done a great job but is working on number of other items adding functionality to the 5200. Infrant being a main competitor in the consumer NAS market would defintely lose some sales

In the meanwhile i tested a real SB3, and the playback itself is very good. I did not try to re-scan the folders to prevent it from going wrong. As long as you browse from SB3 through folders it keeps on working great for me.
So i 2nd pellicle that if Thecus could lend a helping hand to figure out where it goes wrong, it would be great.

Several Issues with SS implementation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had a number of issues with the current SlimServer implementation on the 5200 ...
(1) The one described here about DBI::mysql failing to load -- this is basically an issue that the setgid code ($) variable setting in perl) causes the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be cleared for any future exec's, thus when SS tries to fork the scanner.pl it can't find the mysqlclient library. The startup code needs to be changed to fix this, but it's trivial.
(2) AutoCommit is set, yet manual commit's are attempted ... this doesn't seem to be commonly reported, but it completely stops my system from scanning, a workaround is to set autocommit to 0 in Schema.pm, but I don't really know the implications of this.
(3) The version of alac provided is old and doesn't work with newer format files ... I've built the current version and it works perfectly.
(4) The user "nobody" requires access to your music directory, unfortunately this isn't doable via the web interface unless the folder is a public one. And, if you use an ACL (rather than basic perms) the SS code still fails since it does very noddy access detection.
I think the module needs a little work, and I'd like to see a configurable "run as user" option so you can run it as a valid user on the device rather than nobody.
I'm happy to do this myself, but don't want to tread on Andreas Vogel's toes, if you're reading this Andreas drop me a note, would love to discuss this further.
Regards,
Lee.

The major issue in the prior module version was related to MySQL scans. These issues seem to be resolved and this version of the module seems to have full Slimserver functionality.
Rescan works - both in the update and clear and rescan modes.
Scheduled routine scan works.
Album Art for web interface now working!
Able to use various sort option such as for compilation albums etc. which did not work due to the SQL scan issues before.
So far the release seems to have full functionality.
Looking at the slimserver.log file Only a couple of error messages: At initial startup the following error was shown three times sequentially before scanning began. 2007-05-01 10:31:22.2696 Use of uninitialized value in join or string at /raid/data/module/PERL/perl/lib/5.8.8/File/Spec/Unix.pm line 81.
The last line of the log the following error was logged. I believe this was when I did a reboot of the NAS.
2007-05-01 20:26:45.0626 Issuing rollback() for database handle being DESTROY'd without explicit disconnect() at /raid/data/module/SLIMSERVER/slimserver/Slim/Schema/Storage.pm line 31.
Thanks to Esselle and Andreas for their work on getting Slimserver fully functioning on the Thecus n5200.

I have a very annoying problem with with my squeezebox in that it keeps trying to upload new firmwares. Slimdevices say it is a problem with slimserver and I need to update to 6.5.2. Is there any way I can get this onto the 5200? Thanks

What exactly did Slimdevices say the problem was. I am using the module with no issues with SB3's. Is it the server is not loading the firmware to the SB or the SB is at the right version of firmware and should not be loading new firmware etc....?
6.5.2 is not the official release so I am not sure why this is being advised. This is not available at the moment. I thnk the next official release is supposed to be 7.0 fro wha I have seen in the postings at the SD forums.
Please provide more info.

I now have my thecus n5200 and confirm that i have this problem still. The workaround is to:
Allow your SB3(s) to upgrade to version 81 via SqueezeNetwork, then change all references to 72 in file opt/slimserver/Firmware/squeezebox2.version to 81
This occurs when using pandora and a slimserver 6.5.1

Slimserver 6.5.2 seems to be the "official" release now.

Omega
To update the module to install 6.5.2, would it be as simple as substituting the appropriate slimserver version into the the mod file? If so, which slimserver version did you use -
.no-cpan-arch.tar.gz
.noarch.rpm
or
.tar.gz?
thanks

Anyone have 6.5.2 working on the N5200? Tips for how to get it installed would be appreciated.

Sorry to be a pest, but Slimserver is up to 6.5.3 officially - quite a few bug fixes.
I'd provide an updated modification myself, but my efforts so far have been fruitless.
Thanks in advance for your consideration - and thanks for all the effort to provide these mods!
