I am setting up my N5200 box as a centralized online backup server (AhsayOBS) for all my PCs and servers (e.g. Exchange) in my office as documented in forum.ahsay.com/viewtopic.php?t=1756 . With 512MB of RAM, AhsayOBS runs much smoothly and can support more users.

So I'm guessing no one has found a 1GB module that works in the Thecus?

stanley, let me get this right, you got a 1G DDR400 to work in yours? what brand of memory did you use, I have tried many brands, and none work for me. You stated that it needs a different os, and it looks like you have FreeNAS, but mine won't even boot.
I have the VGA header on mine, and can see that it never even gets to the point of loading the OS yet. When I have a 1G in, I get nothing, put back the 256 or 512 and works perfectly.
If you can list brand and model number, it would be good.
Thanks,
teng

Teng,
I used the 1GB DDR400 the brand name is Aexea, the model is AMD 12864-400 LN3254 which chip set is Elpida, D5108AFTA-5B-E
but I think any brand name is compatible for N5200, if you can connect the VGA port, you can through the screen what problem cause.
If you cannot solid the VGA port, you can through the jumper to reset the BIOS go back to default setting. But the system will be shared 32MB for chip set 854GL display used. PS : when you reset the BIOS setting which maybe cause cannot boot from Flash Module Disk, please careful!!

I just installed 1GB DDR400 of Corsair VS1GB400C3 also is ok, I surely the N5200 is 100% compatible 1GB DDR Ram. Stanley

short question,
what is the benefit using 1GB RAM?
Is there a performance boost?

I installed a 1G Infineon / Qimonda DDR333 CL2.5 and it is running fine since 2 days. FW 2.00.08
The web interface is reacting much faster.
Performance tuning uses different knobs to turn (which may use memory btw)...

have you all had to play with bios settings to get the 1GB sticks to boot sucessfully, or was it just plug in and go? I ask because all the 1GB modules I have tried just stop the nas booting, it just sits there bleeping at me

It was really Plug n Play ;D
maybe they changed something in 2.00.08 to make it running?
I will post if something goes wrong.

G'day,
Just speculating here, but could it be that the 1GB modules that did work are low density DDRs whilst the DDRs that don't work are high density modules which don't work with all mobos / chipsets?
For instance the Corsair VS1GB400C3 that stanley got working is a low density DDR module. I can't find specs on the other modules that people have got working since the info provided is not specific enough or there is no info on the web.
mmattel - can you provide the specific part number for the 1GB Infineon you got working so we can check this flimsy hypothesis?
Cheers Teck

For instance the Corsair VS1GB400C3 that stanley got working is a low density DDR module. Like drewy, whenever I put a 1 Gig stick of ram in mine, it would just beep and nothing else. I have the VGA header on mine and I can see that it just does not like any 1 Gig stick of RAM that I put in. I originally thought that it might be low density vs high density, however kylui already tried the same Corsair VS1GB400C3 RAM that Stanley said works in his. The post is at thecususergroup.proboards106.com/index.cgi?board=n5200modifications&action=display&thread=1499&page=1#7637 I have also tried a few different low density RAM with no luck. I have come to think that it might be the version of BIOS that is on the device. I am trying to get a copy of Stanley's BIOS to try, once I get that, I will be able to more accurately answer this. I had Stanley verify the version of his N5200 and it is the same as mine. Version 1.1, so the only thing that is left is that he might have a different version of the BIOS. I will give an update once I find out. Teng

short question, what is the benefit using 1GB RAM? Is there a performance boost? schumi It all depends on what you want to do with your N5200. If you plan to use for its basic function, just as a NAS and nothing else, there is no need to upgrade the RAM, the performance gain is marginal, as it is primarily in the WEB interface which you should need to touch very little. If you however plan to add modules to do other stuff, examples like Media Server, Groupware, email server, web server, etc... then the added RAM becomes a must. Teng
