Rainer, there are probably still physical reads/writes to your disks. Prior to 2.00.04 "cupsd" was updating the the root certicates in regular intervals. With 2.00.04 these updates have been disabled so cupsd should no longer prevent the disks from spinning down (/etc/cups/cupsd.conf: RootCertDuration 0). You could check your /raidX/sys and raidX/data for files updated recently. To do so, create a file under /raid/data/tmp and after 10 minutes check if other files are newer - for example: touch /raid0/data/tmp/tcheckXX sleep 600 find /raid0 -follow -newer /raid0/data/tmp/tcheckXX Every file/directory listed may cause the disks from spinning down later (you will of course not see files that have been delete inbetween) /Falk

Hi there, well on my N5200pro (upgraded from 2.00.01 to 2.00.04) there is still no chance with the spin down ( The activity in my case is caused by samba, which writes every minute the file browse.dat to to the path /raid/data/tmp/var. Also there is some conf entry in the system generated stuff ( /img/bin/rc/assemble_conf) where it defines an entry called lock directory = /raid/data/tmp/var (didn't get a chance why it is used ?!) So I'm now thinking of how to change the cfg for samba... So long, jAMMER

I can confirm that as of 2.00.04 spin down is working, as I can hear all my drives spin up when I access them after a long time.
My setup is 5 x WD5000AAKS, without all of the jumper settings at default (which seems to be no jumpers).

Thats what I just posted to another thread... There is one file that is updated every minute (/raid/data/tmp/var/browse.dat). The file is being updated by nmbd if nmbd becomes the local master browser. The file holds information about other systems providing windows services. There is a good chance that spin down would succeed if you either disable CIFS (Samba) or if your nmbd would not become the local master browser. Since smb.conf does not specify the "os level" the default of 20 has to be assumed and this means that the nmbd running on your NAS box will win election for the local master browser if there is no windows domain controller running in the same broadcast domain - this will probably be true for all boxes used in a home network. Conclusion: Most home users will never see their disks spin down because of nmbd becoming the local master browser and therefore updateing a file on the disks periodically. Ways to get the spin down feature working in this cases are: - set "local master" to "no" in smb.conf
- set "os level" to a very low value (e.g. "1") in smb.conf
- use tmpfs (memory) for the "lock directory"
- symlink browse.dat into tmpfs (memory) - if this will work anyway
I would vote for for the last option to be implemented by Thecus if applicable. /Falk

The ticket ID is: ZCW-42077-204/Falk Hi Fajo and all N5200 users i have sent an email to Thecus Support with my configuration for this problem! and got back an answer with instructions for doing (e.g. disable all services und modules, disconnect the network cable) and sent them back my conf.bin! One day later I received following answer: "Dear Sir, Thanks for your reply. After analysis the CONF.BIN and didn't found any service make HDD spinning up, thus we would take times to verify possible form others aspect, thus we would thanks for your patience in this period. Here is the new solution for "spin down" with a master raid (Raid 5) from Thecus support: (last e-Mail from today)
Dear Sir,
Due to technical issue, Master RAID still had cannot spin down limitation.
If we really needs HDD spin down, we can use a most unimportant drive and create it as JBOD with Master RAID, thus other drives will spin down after reached to idle time, it might not a perfect solution but at least still have 4 drive spin down.
Please note that the solution only work for N5200 PRO series and 1U4500 series.
Best Regards,
Yvon Lei Technical Support Thecus Technology Corp. 15F, No. 79, Xin Tai Wu Rd., Sec. 1, Xi-Zhi, Taipei County, Taiwan 221, R.O.C. TEL: +886-2-2698-1788 ext. 611
Unbelievable but true

Hi. After several test my N5200 ( 2.00.04 ) NOW Spin Down OK the drives. ;D In my case the CIFS/SAMBA are the cause and i solve it: - Install IMGDUP module. -Edit /raid/data/module/IMGDUP/img/bin/rc/ assemble_conf. -locate the line, echo -e "lock directory = /raid/data/tmp/var" -change to, echo -e "lock directory = /tmpfs/var" This redirect to RAM the file browse.dat (and other) that is refresed many times, prevent the HDs stop. Thanks to all in this forum for info and your help. Sorry for my bad english Ciaaao
