So I've been running with the default firmware for some time and decided to upgrade, for no real reason except I felt like it, which is stupid, but hey lesson learned. The latest firmware kept failing through the upgrade. It failed at least 15 times from multiple browsers. I downloaded multiple times, put it in different places. No luck. And of course being the impatient fool that I am, I rebooted. Doh! I know, I know, don't reboot, but I knew I was up nutses creak without a paddle so why not.
Well now the IP address is pingable and an nmap scan of the box tells me that RPC is open port 111, but nothing else, no ssh, no web server, nada. I've tried to use the serial port, but I get nothing. I've tried doing the factory reset and that does nothing, it doesn't even reset the password, according to the Thecus setup wizard, which logs in and lets me change the password and do nothing else. My box is fubar, basically.
I've emailed support, but I have a feeling that this forum will be faster.
Earlier posts talked about a shell script, factory_reset.sh that someone used. Oh please, please, pretty please with sugar on top, send me that script or better yet just post it in the forums so everyone can benefit from it! Thank you much, kind people!

Andreas is a life saver! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I appreciate it. Now all my precious p0rn is saved. The script worked perfectly and I am able to get back into my machine. Wonderful! Fangface I am sending you the script and the PDF right now, check your mail! I've modified it to work with the latest .08 firmware as the script was set to use the .07 firmware which is not available. Also, MAKE SURE to plug your usb stick into the back of your n5200, the usb port in the front does not work for this, for some weird reason. Afterwards, the array will rebuild. The data should still be there, but it will take many hours to rebuild if you have a large array. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we can post files here, so I have uploaded the files to my web server, in case anyone needs them! www.bulldogdata.com/files/n5200reset.zipI have uploaded the script and the PDF with instructions. You will need to download the latest firmware from Thecus. As of March 25, 2007, that firmware is 1.00.08.bin. If the latest firmware changes, you will need to edit the shell script on a unix machine (NOT A WINDOWS MACHINE or you will mess up the format of the script) and change this line: fwfile="N5200upgrade.1.00.08.bin" to whatever the new name of the file is. Good luck! -Buddha

Thanks Buddha and Andreas!! The files worked like a charm!! My box is back alive and kickin! Seriously, Thecus should make such files readily on their site, instead of us begging tru their support, and with no gurantee of any response

I have the same problem and tech support just sent me the script. However, after placing the script and the firmware upgrade file on the USB flash drive and booting the N5200 with the USB flash drive connected, I see the self testing screen, then I see the booting display for about 4-5 minutes. Then it simply goes back to the self-testing screen and stays there. Am I doing something wrong? I have tried all the USB ports and have verified that the USB drive has a FAT partition. But it seems as though I do not get far enough in the boot process to even read the flash drive. Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I followed your process when I tried (and failed) to get my N5200 to upgrade from 1.0.1.3 to 1.0.0.8 (can anyone explain how 1.0.0.8 is NEWER than 1.0.1.3 ?). Anyway, as several others have indicated, the update died at 5%. Upon rebooting the box, the web server seemed missing and the box couldn't be pinged at the default or my configured IP address. But using the USB drive on the back with the factory_reset script and the latest firmare did the trick...my box came to life!!! Again, many thanks!

Oh yes, I almost forgot, the Thecus instructions were not clear to me. I wasn't sure what point to remove the USB drive. In my case the busy light (upper-left corner orange LED) didn't blink, but turned on steady. I left the USB drive connected, and the Thecus updated, then reboot, then updated again. At a few points the orange LED turned off briefly then came back on solid.
I'm guessing every time the box rebooted it reloaded everything from the USB. I simply waited until I saw the next rebooting message then pulled the USB drive. That seemed to be the trick. When the box finished booting it was running normally.

Hey alphabob, good info. You might want to add that info to the Wiki somewhere as it seems many users are going to end up using the reset script.

Andreas,
Would you make the script to work with the latest firmware 2.00.4?
I do not have an Unix platform and can't change the script myself.
I'll be happy if you would mail me at
jens.krogsgaard@oncable.dk
Thank you! Jens

So, am I to understand that the N5200 doesn't really boot off USB (god knows, mine won't!) - unless maybe you solder in the video/keyboard/mouse connectors and change the BIOS to force it to boot off USB? Seems like a lot of work, but mine is dead at the moment.
Does anyone know how to get the flash daughterboard/raid controller to mount on the desktop as a flash drive, so I can transfer fresh firmware to it directly? I tried with a 2.5 IDE converter but no luck getting the mac to see it. Also, the male/female aspects of the connector mean you need an oddball gender changer which I was able to come up with, but still no luck.
At this point, it seems I have to buy a new one and swap parts until the old one starts working & then return. Any better suggestions?

yes, the N5200 doesn't really boot of USB, this was done purposely, so that you can boot the device with a USB device connected. To make the change, you do need the VGA header installed to make the change and so it is more work than needed for most users. I just did the VGA header and used a USB keyboard, it works just fine.
I am not sure why you were not able to see the device on your mac, it should work just fine. Either the flash drive is dead, the gender change was not working correctly, or the flash drive was connected backup are the only thing that I can think of, as mine works just fine. I use a 3.5 to 2.5 IDE converter and plug to my computer on the secondary IDE connector and it works just fine for me. Shows up as a normal hard drive. I remember one other member here using a USB adapter and it was working fine too, jaysung comes to mind, but I could be wrong about that. I would recommend checking the connection again just to be sure.

Hi teng,
I had changed the first boot device to USB-HD, but I cannot success to use the "factory reset.sh" to rebuild the OS. Could you let me know other suggestion to reinstall the OS?
thank you!! Stanley
