From time to time the smb service has become unresponsive in my N5200, not too often but when it happens, windows explorer, or any other program trying to access the smb shares freeze up. Sometimes the web interface still works at this stage and I can reboot the N5200 to get everything back up again. Sometimes, however, the web interface, or rather Apache, has died too. When that happens, all I can do is a hard reset by keeping the on/off button pressed for a long time. Usually everything is fine when the N5200 boots up again. This is now becoming more than an annoyance and I see no mention of this sort of thing being fixed in subsequent firmware releases. I am still running 1.00.10 and I am a bit reluctant to upgrade until it is clearly stated that this problem is fixed. I am not certain, but I get the feeling that the frequency of these freeze-ups is related to the ammount of network traffic. And not necessarily traffic directed to the N5200 itself. Could it be that some buffer in the IP stack gets over-run and that the process filling it writes data over something important when the packets can't be examined in time? Currently I only use a 100 Mbit/s network, but I plan to upgrade to Gbit/s shortly, I can't imagine that helping with this issue. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Best regards, freber

Do You use DHCP or static IP ? Some users have experienced problems with using DHCP, which have disappeared after switching to static IP. br Peter

I suppose that I can try setting it to static for a while, but I need it to get the DNS servers set up dynamically. Thanks for the tip. I will try it to see if it makes a difference. EDIT: How very odd, it won't let me turn off DHCP. I went into Network->WAN and set DHCP: Disabled, then I entered the IP, the mask, the gateway and the DNS servers and clicked "Apply". It said that the settings were changed and that I had to reboot the box. I did, and after the reboot I looked in the Network->WAN display again - DHCP was still enabled! I verified with my DHCP server and saw that my N5200 had indeed requested a DHCP lease. Very strange. I have to admit that I haven't really played with the settings much since I upgraded to 1.00.10, but this can't be right... Maybe I need to upgrade the firmware after all, but I hate to do this sort of thing since I have no way of backing up the data on the RAID.

Thats realy odd - I use static IP from the very beginning (starting with FW 1.00.06) and had never problems with it. br Peter

Reading your post quickly, I have one question: Do you see any errors in the eventlog? If having some disk i/o errors it's possibly because of an bug in the firmware release .08 and .10 with temporary space on the Flash-card that's filling up space, but not freeing it up again. And yes that happens more often on boxes where requests to and from the device are higher. We had this problem with several N5200's and it vanished with the upgrade to 2.00.01.

I had a disk I/O error report once, but the problem I am describing has been there long before that happened and the error message has not been given since. I get no log entries whatsoever prior to these crashes.

Hello, I have experienced smb freezes i.e timeouts using a linux client. Rebooting helped but they where to frequently occuring to be satisfied with it. Firmware was 2.00.01. Didn't see the problem with 2.00.04 until now.

Hi Everyone
Not sure if this will help. I have recently bought a N4310 and having constant issues freezing. I have looked into it and its seems to be an issue with the unit running out of RAM.
I think it may have something to do with the fact it cant always write to the HDD fast enough and tries to store what you are doing in RAM until if falls over.
Unfortunately i have found Thecus support to be useless in this matter.
