I'm using the MediaServer service of the 5200 PRO. After a few hours, I'll try to access the Metabolic Media Server, and I can't find my songs/photos/etc. Checking the status, I can see the MediaServer service has "STOPPED" -- and this obviously explains it. But WHY does it stop? Nothing appears in the log file to indicate an error or fault.

I don't like the Metabolic (diabolic!?) software much......
Do you really need this software? There are some other modules available which really do a better job....
As for your real question: it is almost impossible for us to know why the server software just stops without having any error messages. IMO you should just report this to Thecus, maybe they will investigate themselves....

There are 3 now: - JINZORA - SLIMSERVER - TWONKYMEDIA Jinzora and Slimserver are free. Twonkymedia is commercial software. I think the best is to try them (twonkymedia has also a 30 day free trial period) and then choose which of them fits best. Check them on the Thecus wiki page: onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/Main_Pagebr Peter

What do You mean with best Software ?
On the server side or on the client side ?
I Personally use Twonkymedia with HW clients - Zensonic Z500 for Video and Pictures, Noxon for music. Videos are mainly in DIVX, XVID (standard and high definition) and MPEG2 format, music is MP3 and streaming from the internet and pictures are JPEG.
Metabolic was not working with the Z500 and omega was so nice to release the first version of the twonkymedia module. I have used twonkymedia before and it fits perfect in my environment.
As I have an old twonkymedia licence with lifetime upgrade included I have not tried the other ones.
Other users prefer other servers and clients and that was the reason I have written - try them, cause I personally think nobody can say "thats the best software" and not every server software works with every client, even if they claim all to have the standards implemented.
Short words : the best software depends on Your setup and on your needs.

I had the same problem. What happened? - Added a share with pictures
- Obviously there weren't only pictures in it, also ZIP files
- When connecting via DMA "VLC Player" (www.videolan.org) the client showed that he could not read some files.
- I closed VLC Player
- Back to THECUS GUI -> Network -> Media Server
- Unselected share with "bad" files
- THECUS confirmed that the folder has been removed.
- Created test share with one .jpg picture
- Restarted DMA "VLC Player" and connected: oops - there were still the old files. Opening not possible.
- Back to THECUS GUI -> Network -> Media Server
- Page showed "Enable" but now without any share added
- Trying to add a share: confirmed "Folder added" but still no selected folder in the list
- THECUS GUI -> Status -> System: Media Server: Stopped!
Solution- Disable Media Server under THECUS GUI -> Network -> Media Server
- Reboot
- Enable Media Server (Always be patient until the "OK" dialog appears and also after confirming it.
- Unselect share with "bad" files
- Clean share
- Add "clean" share to the used media folders again.
Explanation- Media Server likes only filetypes it can handle.
- It seems that the Media Server does also not like adding files to a used share while up and running.
- Nevertheless the media server seems to work VERY unstable.
- I will switch to another.
