Hi
I recently bought a N2100, I added two 500GB (maxtor diamond max plus). It works fine, but the write speed is a total absolute disaster. It is around 350 kbytes/sec !!! (compared to a read speed of 7000 kbytes/sec)
I tried to used raid 0, JBOD, raid 1 : same result. My ethernet switch is ok (100 Mbits/sec) and I even tried a new one, same result (read speed was ok, but I just wanted to confirm). I tried to copy from three different computers too (XP)
It takes me ages to copy any file ...
Sharing experience would be appreciated :-)

If you let us know the exact firmware version number and HDD model, then it would be more helpful.

I am also using Ethernet 100 switches. I copied a 414MB file to the N2100 (RAID 1 with WD 500GB drives) in 74 seconds, which I calculate as 5.6MB/s (44.8Mbit/s). Not too shabby, considering that the "100" is a theoretical maximum and doesn't take into account TCP/IP overhead.

Well, I just repeated the test with GigE connections - and the speed was the same.

(sorry, in initial post I said Maxtor Diamond max, these are in another NAS I'm also using)

WD might not be compatible with N2100. Can you try with another model?

Well ... this disks are not the cheapest ones available and I would not be very happy to just throw them away. An BTW, it is working, but only write speed is terribly slow. Read is ok

The WD5000KS drives work fine. That's what I'm using.

Out of interest what Antivirus are you running? My main PC running Norton writes preety quickly to the N2100 but I have a laptop that (even with a wired link) writes really slowly to it (and that is using McAfee which I am beginning to feel is pants - it came pre-installed from Dell and initial sub is just about to expire so it will soon be gone I think!)

I have a strong dislike of McAffee products. Myself, I use Norton Internet Security. I can't imagine, though, why an AV product would interfere with disk writes.

I use either TrendMicro 14 or Avast 4.6 (I have 4 computers @ home) but they all have the same result ...

"I can't imagine, though, why an AV product would interfere with disk writes." How do you think it traps downloads of malicious stuff then .... it scans files being written and looks for virus signatures Anyway - there is now a beta firmware out that really speeds up the N2100 - see ktula.com/category/tech/

As far as I know, the AV products don't swing into action until the file is closed. It would be a big hit on performance for them to trap each write, and even then it would be pointless.
I agree that the new firmware makes a big difference. The same file I said took 74 seconds now takes 41 seconds or 10.1MB/sec using GigE.

philippe44,
How are you testing your file transfer rate? Even with the latest firmware (2.1.01), file transfer rate for a folder with a lot of small files (more than 150) is still quite slow.
When i did my tests on this firmware, i was testing on a gigabit network so i have no numbers for a 100 Mbps ethernet. But i suspect you will see some improvement. On a gigibit ethernet, the improvement is quite significant.
