Hello,
I use my Thecus 2100 as a file server but have an issue with the unit going into a sleep or delay mode. After some period of time the Thecus appears to go to sleep which can be woken up by network access. I use the Thecus to store my quickbooks files, email files, mapped drive, etc. This causes a lot of problems:
1) I will get constant write failed messages in thunderbird when the unit goes to sleep. I can only resolve this by accessing the thecus directly.
2) If I leave my quickbooks programs and files open and try to save after some amount of inactivity, the write will fail and quickbooks will shut down.... i could lose lots of vital data!
3) If I leave the thecus inactive for some time, the go to my computer/file explorer my workstation is lags while waiting for the thecus to respond. This can take 15 seconds and makes my computer very slow and laggy to respond to various disk access needs.
Is there a way to resolve this? This is a large enough problem that I will have to return the thecus and simply use a computer with a raid card as my file server.

One solution is to turn on itunes server and set it for 10min scanning. The thecus won't go to sleep then - not the most elegant solution but works nonetheless

Thats not a bad idea, I'll give that a shot and see what the result it. I've noticed that the box is very slow to respond even after accessing the drive sometimes so I wonder if this is truly a sleep issue after all. Thanks!

I did try turning on the iTunes server on a 10 min rescan interval and this didnt solve my problem. I was still getting constant write fails unless i went into the thecus via my mapped drive in windows explorer and opened a few folders. I changed the interval to 1 min and this may have solved the issue. I will report back again in a few days to say whether this is the solution or not. It still seems very odd to me that if i leave the box alone for say 5 minutes and i have had a word file open on that mapped drive that it should fail when i try to write the file to the drive (unless i go open some folders on the mapped drive). I'm running firmware v2.1.00, is anyone else mapping the thecus and using it as a fileserver? If so is anyone else having issues like this?

I haven't experiment this and not sure if it works
But as far as I know, the box has configured to spindown the harddisk using the hdparm command, which you can disable in /app/cfg/rc
#/usr/sbin/hdparm -S 241 /dev/sda #/usr/sbin/hdparm -S 241 /dev/sdb

How did you map the drive? thru IP address or Netbios Name?

The feature of sleep mode sounds neat as this should have the effect that the HDs are shut down thus not generating heat which should in return slow down the rpms of the fan making it silent, e.g. through the night. (BTW: what is the minimum RPM that the N2100 will set depending on temperature?)
I have disabled iTunes server, then ftp, even took out the lan from the Box to test the "sleep mode" but didn't realise any change. Even after 2 hours the box was equaly hot and loud and when I rehooked the lan (wakeup event according to this thread) no difference in HD spin-up was heard which leads to the outcome that the HDs were spinning all the time.
Is there anything specific I have to do to enable this sleep mode? After how much time does this start?
Any feedback is welcome.

By default, the disk drives in N2100 should go to sleep in 30 minutes without activity (if iTunes server is disabled or if the rescan interval is greater than 30 minutes). I have noticed that even in sleep mode, the disk drive temperature is still in the high 40s (degrees celsius). I think other than placing the N2100 in an environment with low ambient temperature, or adding additional ventilation openings and/or add additional fans, it will be difficult to lower the operating temperature. While my N2100 was in operation, i opened up the lid and have a fan blow toward it, i managed to drop the HD temperature from 49 degrees C to 39 degrees C. In the latest beta firmware (2.1.01), Thecus has added/changed a few features that relate to the temperature in the device: - fan speed control (normal/high). When i set mine to high, it goes as high 7900 RPM. - disk power management (30mins/60mins/120mins/never). This basically sets the sleep time for the disk drives - 30mins means 30 minutes of inactivity will make the disk drives go to sleep. - iTunes rescan interval (1 min/10 mins/30 mins/60 mins/1 day). In addition, the file transfer performance has increased quite significantly in the beta firmware. I have documented the performance here: ktula.com/2006/09/11/thecus-n2100-21014-beta-firmware-raid0-or-jbod/ktula.com/2006/09/10/more-on-thecus-n2100-21014-beta-firmware-performance/The only drawback so far from installing the beta firmware is that while i was transferring some big files back to the N2100 after all my testing, it hung in the middle of the transfer and was not responsive via the network. Even the power reset button in front of the N2100 was not able to turn it off. I had to unplug power supply to power it down. After it came back up, i had to issue another reboot because one of my disk drives went missing the first time the N2100 came back up.

Thaks for the info! This helps. Waiting anxiously for the new firmware. I am currently working on a modification which will mount an 80mm Papst fan (12dB) on the outside with two succesive fan adapters. Hope this will help. Will report as soon as this is running.

There are some information about Seagate's Work Load Management (WLM) in the following link, Barracuda ES Hard Drives Overview. It seems that the HDDs will decide to go to sleep itself.
